Starbucks has been told to pay $50 million (₹415 crore) in compensation after a hot drink spill at a Los Angeles drive-through badly burned delivery driver Michael Garcia. The accident in 2020 resulted in a high-profile claim of negligence on behalf of the coffee giant.

What Happened?

According to Garcia, who was picking up a delivery order, one of the drinks was top-heavy in the cupholder and improperly sealed. His genitalia were severely burned, disfigured, and his nerves were harmed as the hot contents spilled onto his lap as he reached for it. The severity of the wounds affected his daily activities, mobility, and mental well-being.

According to the lawsuit filed in California Superior Court, Starbucks was negligent in securing the drink lids and failed to ensure proper safety measures for handling hot beverages. The jury ruled in favour of Garcia, citing Starbucks’ failure to meet safety standards and awarded him a massive compensation package for his physical and emotional distress.

Starbucks’ Response & Legal Battle

Starbucks disagrees with the decision and intends to appeal it even though it has already been made. The spokesperson for the company said in a statement:

“We sympathize with Mr. Garcia, but we firmly disagree with the jury’s decision that we were at fault for this incident. We believe the damages awarded are excessive.”

The company also claimed that it has strict safety procedures in its stores, including handling hot beverages. But the jury heard evidence that Starbucks had not acted sufficiently to forestall such accidents.

What’s Next?

Starbucks will most probably appeal the ruling, which would delay Garcia’s compensation. The case is also regarded to raise issues about corporate responsibility, employee safety, and potential modifications in the food service sector.

While the legal battle continues, this lawsuit serves as a reminder of the risks associated with hot beverages and workplace hazards – and how even a minor oversight can lead to multi-million-dollar consequences.
