Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has invited American businesses to expand their investments in India, positioning the country’s growing food processing industry, modernising agricultural supply chains and large consumer market as opportunities for long-term commercial partnerships.

A key engagement during his Chicago visit was a meeting with Juan Ricardo Luciano, Chair of the Board and CEO of Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), where discussions centred on opportunities for the global agribusiness company to strengthen its operations and investment footprint in India.

Highlighting India’s evolving agricultural landscape, Goyal pointed to the combination of an expanding food processing sector, improvements in agricultural value chains and domestic consumer demand as factors supporting future business collaboration.

“With our rapidly expanding food processing sector, modernizing agricultural value chains, and massive consumer base, India offers tremendous potential for sustainable growth and long term collaboration,” Goyal said in a post on X.

The meeting placed food processing and agriculture at the centre of the minister’s investment outreach, alongside discussions covering technology, entrepreneurship and professional services.

India-US Startup Collaboration Takes Centre Stage

Beyond traditional investment opportunities, Goyal also focused on strengthening commercial connections between the Indian and American startup ecosystems.

He delivered the keynote address at a US-India Business Council (USIBC) roundtable in Chicago titled ‘Startups & Innovation: Scaling Ideas, Investment and Growth’.

The discussions examined three areas relevant to startups seeking international expansion: access to venture investment, commercialisation of innovative ideas and partnerships with established corporations.

The discussions also explored how venture funding, commercialisation and corporate partnerships could help Indian and American startups expand across both markets, turn innovative ideas into business opportunities and strengthen bilateral innovation ties.

Goyal also explored avenues to support emerging high-growth enterprises through deeper cooperation between the two countries.

Artificial Intelligence and Business Services Feature in Corporate Meetings

Technology and business services formed another part of Piyush Goyal’s engagements with American corporate leaders.

The Commerce Minister held separate discussions with Paul Grewal, Chief Legal and Global Affairs Officer at Cognition, concerning opportunities to leverage the company’s artificial intelligence solutions and deepen its presence in India.

The interaction brought AI-related business opportunities into the broader investment discussions taking place during the Chicago visit.

Goyal also met Greg Case, CEO of professional services firm Aon, to discuss the company’s existing operations in India and possibilities for further expansion.

During the meeting, the minister highlighted India’s strengths in talent, innovation and business services, identifying these as areas with potential for closer commercial engagement between Indian and American enterprises.

Chartered Accountants Identified as Key to Cross-Border Business Growth

Alongside his corporate meetings, Goyal interacted with the leadership and members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) representing its Chicago, Michigan and Ohio chapters.

The discussions highlighted the role of financial professionals in supporting businesses operating across international markets, particularly as companies navigate differing regulatory and taxation requirements.

Goyal emphasised that chartered accountants could help strengthen India-US commercial relationships through expertise in cross-border taxation, regulatory compliance and financial governance.

“Chartered Accountants have a pivotal role in strengthening this partnership by helping businesses navigate cross-border taxation, regulatory compliance and financial governance, while making Indian enterprises investment-ready for global capital,” he said in his social media post.

The engagement added a financial and regulatory dimension to the minister’s investment outreach, highlighting the professional support businesses require when pursuing international capital and expansion.

Taken together, Goyal’s Chicago meetings covered multiple dimensions of India-US economic cooperation, from food processing investments and agricultural modernisation to startup financing, artificial intelligence and business services.
