India’s beauty and personal care market has seen a growing number of homegrown brands trying to stand out with products designed around changing consumer preferences. Among the newer names is SAMMMM, a self-care brand launched in June 2025 by 16-year-old entrepreneur Samara Roy.

The brand was built around Roy’s own experiences as a teenager, particularly her struggles with identity, belonging and the pressure to meet expectations from different parts of her life.

A startup idea shaped by teenage experiences

Roy’s interest in beauty and self-care began when she was 12. She described using beauty as a way to cope with school pressure while looking for an authentic community around her.

For Roy, one of the biggest challenges was finding people who genuinely shared her values and with whom she could connect. She also faced pressure from academics, parents and peers.

That experience eventually shaped her approach to SAMMMM. Instead of trying to fit into existing expectations, Roy wanted to build a brand around individuality, inclusivity and community.

Her understanding of younger consumers became one of the central ideas behind the business.

SAMMMM’s first product

SAMMMM entered the market with a pH-reactive lip tint designed to adjust according to each consumer.

Roy built the company alongside her father, Mantosh Roy, a former vice president at Nykaa, and Rishi Seth, also a former vice president at Nykaa.

The founders positioned SAMMMM specifically around Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers, challenging the traditional perception that beauty products are primarily meant for older consumers.

Roy believes that younger consumers can also explore beauty products when those products make them feel more confident or comfortable.

She has also maintained that products or ideas that do not fit the principles she has established for the brand should not move forward.

The challenge of being a teenage founder

Building a company while attending school has presented Roy with a different set of challenges.

One of them is being taken seriously in rooms where most people are older and more experienced. Roy said she has often had to demonstrate her understanding of the beauty industry rather than rely on her position as the founder.

At the same time, she sees her age as an advantage when it comes to understanding the consumers SAMMMM is targeting.

Roy argues that while she does not have the years of professional experience that older entrepreneurs may have, she has a close understanding of how teenagers think, behave and interact with products and brands.

Funding and 17x quarterly sales growth

SAMMMM has attracted institutional investor interest following its initial seed round led by Fireside Ventures and Sauce VC. The company subsequently raised four bridge rounds to support its expansion.

The company has not disclosed its revenue trajectory.

However, Mantosh Roy said quarterly gross sales increased around 17 times between July-September 2025, the second quarter of FY2025-26, and April-June 2026.

The growth came despite the brand operating through a limited channel footprint. Besides its own website, SAMMMM was available through Amazon and Nykaa.

The company sold close to 1 lakh units of its best-selling products across these three channels, according to Mantosh Roy.

At launch, he claimed that SAMMMM was selling one unit every two minutes across India.

What SAMMMM wants to build next

As the brand expands its retail presence, its focus is not limited to adding more products or increasing its reach.

SAMMMM’s stated priorities include improving repeat customer retention, developing product bundles that can become part of consumers’ routines, and maintaining a focused portfolio of co-created stock keeping units.

For Roy, the larger ambition goes beyond building a large beauty business.

She wants SAMMMM to develop into a community that has a meaningful connection with its consumers, rather than being defined only by its size or financial performance.
