GTA 6 map is set to become Rockstar Games’ biggest yet, featuring six distinct regions, detailed building interiors and a completely redesigned weather system. New revelations about Leonida offer a clearer picture of just how ambitious the upcoming game could be.
Rockstar Games has finally revealed more about the scale of GTA 6’s map, and there’s much more to explore than previously confirmed. The game’s fictional state of Leonida will feature the largest map Rockstar has ever created, bringing together sprawling urban environments, natural landscapes and a variety of activities.
In an interview with Game Informer, Rockstar Games‘ head of development and co-studio head, Aaron Garbut, confirmed that Leonida is the studio’s largest map “by some degree”.
The revelation offers a significant insight into the scale of GTA 6, particularly for players wondering how its open world will compare with GTA 5.
But the size of the map is only part of the story. Rockstar is also focusing on building interiors, environmental detail and an advanced weather system designed to make Leonida feel more realistic.
GTA 6 Map: Rockstar Is Going Bigger Than Ever
While Rockstar has not disclosed Leonida’s exact dimensions, Garbut’s comments establish that GTA 6 will feature the largest map in the studio’s history.
What makes the upcoming game particularly interesting is Rockstar’s approach to creating its world. Rather than concentrating exclusively on geographical size, the developer has placed considerable emphasis on making individual locations feel detailed and connected.
Speaking to Game Informer, Garbut explained how extensively the team has worked on the game’s environment.
“This new world is different. We obsessed about every part, the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors, and you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out.”
He added: “This world is a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit.”
His comments highlight Rockstar’s ambition to create an open world that offers more than expansive landscapes. Building interiors, narrow alleys, rooftops and other environmental details have all received attention during development.
The emphasis on interiors is particularly interesting, although Rockstar has not specified how many buildings players will be able to enter.
GTA 6 Map Will Feature Six Different Regions
Inspired by Florida, Leonida will feature six distinct regions, each contributing to the game’s expansive setting.
Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional interpretation of Miami, will serve as the centre of urban life. Its return is one of the most recognisable elements of GTA 6, but the new game will extend far beyond the city’s streets.
The six confirmed regions are:
- Vice City: The Miami-inspired urban centre of Leonida.
- Leonida Keys: One of the six regions making up the fictional state.
- Grassrivers: Another distinct region within Leonida.
- Port Gellhorn: An additional location featured in the game’s expansive setting.
- Ambrosia: One of Leonida’s six confirmed regions.
- Mount Kalaga National Park: A national park region that adds to the geographical variety of the map.
Several of these locations were also showcased in GTA 6: An Extended Look, which premiered on Netflix in August 2026.
Together, the six regions will provide different environments for players to explore, extending the game’s setting beyond the familiar urban landscape of Vice City.
GTA 6 Will Offer Kayaking, Scuba Diving and Base Jumping
Rockstar’s larger map will also accommodate various recreational activities.
Players will be able to experience kayaking, base jumping and scuba diving, offering different ways to explore Leonida’s environments.
These activities add another dimension to the game’s geographical diversity. The combination of urban locations, waterways and natural landscapes creates opportunities for exploration beyond the main storyline.
However, Rockstar has not yet detailed the full range of activities or explained how they will be integrated into the game’s progression.
GTA 6 Introduces a Redesigned Weather System
Alongside its enormous map, GTA 6 will introduce a re-engineered weather system designed to reflect the climatic conditions of Florida.
Speaking to Game Informer, Rockstar’s vice president of art for light and rendering, Owen Shepherd, revealed that the studio has redesigned its approach to weather to make environmental conditions more localised and persistent.
“We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localised and persistent, and really wanted the world to feel dynamically solid and achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before,” Shepherd explained.
The redesigned system represents another important part of Rockstar’s efforts to create a more convincing open world.
Localised weather could allow different parts of Leonida to experience varying conditions, although the developer has not provided specific examples of how the system will operate during gameplay.
The possibility of experiencing tropical storms and hurricanes is particularly intriguing, given Leonida’s Florida-inspired setting.
However, Rockstar has not confirmed whether hurricanes will feature in the game or whether severe weather will directly affect missions, gameplay mechanics or the storyline.
How Much Bigger Is GTA 6’s Map Than GTA 5?
Rockstar’s latest comments establish that Leonida will surpass the size of its previous game worlds, but the developer has not revealed an exact comparison with GTA 5.
Garbut’s description of the map as the studio’s largest “by some degree” indicates a substantial expansion, although no official measurements or percentage comparisons have been provided.
What is clear from the newly revealed details is that Rockstar’s ambitions extend beyond geographical size.
With six regions, extensively developed environments, greater attention to building interiors and a redesigned weather system, GTA 6 is shaping up to deliver a considerably more elaborate open world.
The biggest remaining questions concern just how much of Leonida players will be able to explore, how extensively its buildings can be entered and how its dynamic weather will influence the overall experience.
For now, Rockstar’s latest revelations have provided the clearest indication yet of the scale and environmental detail awaiting players in GTA 6.
