Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup Vimag Labs has raised $5 million in a funding round led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate. The funding marks an important milestone for the young company as it moves closer to commercialising its magnet-free electric motor technology.

This funding will be utilized to improve product development, bolster engineering capabilities, and facilitate early market adoption in the industrial and mobility sectors.

Tackling a Core Challenge in Electric Motors

Most high-efficiency motors today rely on permanent magnets made from rare earth materials, which are costly, difficult to source, and heavily dependent on global supply chains.

Vimag Labs is working to change that. The startup has developed a patented motor architecture that removes the need for physical magnets altogether. Instead, it uses power electronics and advanced control software to generate magnetic behaviour electronically, creating what the company refers to as a virtual magnet.

By doing away with rare earth magnets, the company aims to reduce material dependency while maintaining the performance and efficiency expected from modern electric motors.

Founders with Deep Domain Experience

Vimag Labs was founded by Manish Seth and Dr. Piyush Desai, both of whom bring decades of experience in electric motors, power electronics, and automotive systems. Their backgrounds in building and scaling real-world engineering products have shaped the company’s focus on practical deployment rather than purely experimental research.

The founding team has positioned the startup at the intersection of hardware and software, designing motors where performance improvements can be driven through electronic control and software optimisation.

Technology Moving Beyond the Lab

The company claims that its motor system has attained Technology Readiness Level 7, which indicates that the technology has been tested in real-world settings. Compared to early-stage research concepts, this puts the product closer to commercial use.

Electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, which account for a sizable portion of India’s electric mobility market, are Vimag Labs’ initial focus. These vehicles are an ideal place to start for deployment because they require small, effective, and affordable motor solutions.

In addition to mobility, the company is investigating applications in industrial equipment, HVAC systems, and refrigeration, where electric motors contribute significantly to energy consumption.

Designed for Easy Industry Adoption

A key part of Vimag’s strategy is making its technology easy for manufacturers to adopt. The company says its motor platform can be integrated into existing designs without requiring major changes to manufacturing lines or vehicle platforms.

The motor system combines hardware with proprietary control electronics and software, allowing manufacturers to fine-tune performance electronically. This approach reduces reliance on mechanical redesigns and offers flexibility as efficiency standards and operating requirements evolve.

Why the Investment Matters

Electric motors are amongst the most commonly used machines in the world, and even small gains in efficiency or cost stability can have a large impact at scale. At the same time, growing concerns around rare earth supply chains have pushed manufacturers to look for alternatives.

Vimag Labs’ magnet-free approach addresses both issues. By removing rare earth materials from the motor design, the company offers a potential solution that aligns with cost predictability, sustainability goals, and supply chain resilience. This combination has drawn investor interest at a time when deep-tech innovation is gaining momentum in India.

Strengthening India’s Deep-Tech Landscape

The funding reflects a broader trend of increased investment in Indian deep-tech startups focused on core engineering problems. As the country works to build domestic capabilities in electric mobility and advanced manufacturing, technologies that reduce import dependence and support local innovation are drawing attention.

For Vimag Labs, the $5 million infusion provides the resources needed to move from advanced testing to wider commercial engagement. The company intends to expand its engineering team, refine its motor platform, and deepen collaboration with manufacturing partners.

From Innovation to Industry Impact

Despite years of research, there hasn’t been much widespread use of magnet-free motor concepts. Vimag Labs is presenting its technology as a profitable substitute that strikes a balance between scalability, dependability, and efficiency.

The next stage will concentrate on converting technological advancements into practical implementation. If the startup is successful, it may have a significant impact on the development and manufacturing of electric motors for use in both industrial and transportation applications.
