Taylor Swift has opened up about the making of the “Patient Zero” video, sharing a detailed note about the people, ideas and cinematic influences that shaped the project.

Marking the release of the video, Swift described the experience of working with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki as something “out of a dream sequence,” saying she learned a great deal simply by watching him work.

“The Patient Zero video is finally out in the world!” Swift wrote, before thanking the collaborators who helped bring the project together.

She reserved particular praise for Dakota and Colin, thanking them for trusting her with their “time, taste, and talent.”

Swift also offered a more personal glimpse into the shoot, recalling the fun of “twinning” with a friend throughout production.

“Giggling with your friend because you’re twinning for an entire shoot was a new and truly delightful experience,” she wrote.

Taylor Swift praises Colin’s villainous turn

Swift highlighted Colin’s performance in the video, particularly his transformation into a villain.

She suggested that the performance becomes even more striking when contrasted with his personality away from the camera.

“Colin’s turn as a villain is even more impressive when you get to be around him,” Swift wrote. “He’s an absolute light and as kind as they come.”

She also thanked Cara for taking on the role of what Swift jokingly described as the “lusty other woman,” adding, “That’s what friends are for?”

The playful aside sits alongside a much darker creative framework that Swift said informed the video.

Gothic ghost stories, true crime and psychological thrillers inspired ‘Patient Zero’

In her note, Swift explained that “Patient Zero” gave her an opportunity to explore several cinematic and literary genres she has long been drawn to.

She said the video incorporates elements of gothic ghost stories, true crime and psychological thrillers, while placing those influences inside a setting she had not worked with extensively before.

The house featured in the video was not simply a location.

For Swift, it represented the emotional condition of the relationship at the centre of the story.

“The house was a metaphor for the coldness of a relationship that’s faded and atrophied,” she wrote.

That idea appears to have shaped much of the video’s visual identity.

Swift thanked production designer Ethan Tobman for understanding the concept and translating that emotional atmosphere into the physical world of the video.

She credited him with bringing the feeling behind the house to life through the production design.

Swift thanks editor Chancler Haynes

Swift also singled out editor Chancler Haynes, saying he had “outdone himself” on the project.

Her message reflected the collaborative nature of the video, with Swift using much of the post to acknowledge the people who helped turn its themes into a finished visual.

From cinematography and performance to production design and editing, her note focused heavily on the craft behind the release rather than simply announcing that the video was available.

Taylor Swift thanks the VMAs for the world premiere

Swift closed her message by thanking the VMAs for giving “Patient Zero” a world premiere.

She described the event as a fitting place for the debut, referring to the VMAs as a place closely associated with the celebration of music videos.

“And lastly, thank you to the VMAs for giving us a World Premiere at the place where celebrating music videos became a thing,” she wrote.

She ended the message with a note to her audience: “And so much love for you guys, always.”

For Swift, the release of “Patient Zero” was presented not simply as the arrival of another music video, but as the result of a creative process shaped by film, literature, performance and close collaboration.

Her message made clear that the project gave her room to explore darker storytelling territory while working with a team she deeply valued.
