Taylor Swift has offered the first glimpse of the music video for her new single “Patient Zero,” and the preview lasts just 13 seconds. Yet the brief clip packs in an unusually cinematic set of images, while also revealing two major names joining Swift on screen: Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
The first look premiered on CBS Mornings on Thursday, September 24, ahead of the song’s Friday release. The video was shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, whose film credits include The Revenant, Birdman and Gravity.
Rather than giving away much of the story, the teaser leans heavily into atmosphere. Swift is seen washing her hands, while other flashes include bodies falling into water, a black rose, two women standing beside a grave and an emotional, tear-streaked close-up of the singer.
The 13-second preview carries a distinctly dark and romantic visual tone, leaving the connection between Swift, Johnson and Farrell largely unexplained for now. The full “Patient Zero” music video is scheduled to premiere Sunday, September 27, during the MTV Video Music Awards.
‘Patient Zero’ arrives with a bigger Taylor Swift release
The new single is part of a wider expansion of Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl era.
Swift announced “Patient Zero” on September 22 and followed it a day later by revealing The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, an expanded edition of the album arriving September 25.
The new version contains four additional songs: “Patient Zero,” “Pink Clouding,” “Babylon” and “Cleveland!”
Explaining how the additional material came together, Swift said she travelled to Sweden to celebrate the response to The Life of a Showgirl with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback. What began as a chance to reflect on the album’s reception eventually brought the trio back into a studio.
“There was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs,” Swift wrote while announcing the expanded release.
She described the new material as being born from gratitude for the response to the original album.
A trail of clues came before the announcement
Swift had already started leaving clues before formally unveiling the new music.
During a sketch aired as part of the 2026 Emmy Awards, Swift appeared alongside Mariska Hargitay and joked about looking for evidence that was “hiding in plain sight.”
She then delivered the seemingly disconnected sequence: “Saccharide. Aries. From the vineyard. North or south.”
Fans later pulled letters from the clues to spell “encore,” connecting the appearance to the expanded album announcement that followed.
The involvement of Dakota Johnson has now added another layer to that earlier teasing, with fans linking her appearance in the video to Swift’s “North or south” clue.
A major VMA night for Swift
The premiere of “Patient Zero” will arrive on a significant night for Swift beyond the new video itself.
At the September 27 MTV Video Music Awards, she is also set to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors, an award created to recognise music artists whose behind-the-camera work has contributed to the development of music video and visual storytelling.
Swift has directed several of her own music videos, including “The Man,” “Cardigan,” “Willow,” “I Can See You” and “The Fate of Ophelia,” as well as the All Too Well short film.
For now, however, the focus is on those 13 seconds.
