The next-generation Toyota Fortuner is moving closer to its production form, with fresh spy shots from Thailand revealing several details of the SUV’s redesigned rear section. The latest test vehicle appears to feature production-spec LED tail-lights, a reshaped tailgate, an integrated roof spoiler and a shark-fin antenna.
The rear bumper remains covered in camouflage, but the overall shape is now easier to make out. Compared with the current Fortuner, the upcoming model appears taller and more squared-off, giving the SUV a more upright stance.
The latest sightings add to earlier images that showed a redesigned front end with split headlamps, slim daytime running lights and a larger grille influenced by the latest Toyota Hilux.
New rear design takes shape
The most noticeable change in the latest Fortuner prototype is at the back. The LED tail-lights feature multiple lighting elements and sit higher on the redesigned rear section. The tailgate has also been reshaped, while the roof spoiler appears to be integrated more cleanly into the overall design.
The boxier rear profile continues the tougher visual character associated with the Fortuner, while the sharper surfaces point to a more modern design direction.
Earlier front-end sightings suggest that Toyota is also giving the SUV a wider fascia and flatter bonnet. Together with the squared-off rear, these changes could give the next-generation Fortuner a substantially different appearance while retaining its familiar SUV proportions.
Fortuner prepares for a more technology-focused cabin
The exterior redesign is expected to be accompanied by a significant equipment upgrade. The next-generation Fortuner is expected to receive twin 12.3-inch screens, bringing a larger digital display setup to the cabin.
Other expected additions include Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), wireless smartphone charging, a panoramic sunroof and over-the-air software updates.
Spy shots and earlier reports have also pointed towards a fully digital driver display, a larger infotainment screen, ventilated seats and a 360-degree camera.
The technology upgrade comes as the Fortuner faces newer SUVs with increasingly feature-heavy cabins. Models such as the MG Majestor and Kia Sorento are raising expectations in the premium ladder-frame and large SUV space.
Hilux connection remains central to the next Fortuner
The new Fortuner is expected to share the updated IMV ladder-frame platform with the next-generation Hilux. The architecture is expected to retain the SUV’s focus on durability and off-road ability while allowing Toyota to introduce newer cabin technology and comfort features.
The exterior also appears to strengthen the visual connection between the two Toyota models, particularly around the front-end design.
The changes represent a major update for the Fortuner, which has retained its rugged styling formula while the wider SUV market has moved towards more contemporary designs and advanced driver-assistance technology.
Petrol and diesel engines expected to continue
Despite the extensive design and technology changes, the next-generation Fortuner is expected to continue with petrol and diesel powertrains.
The expected engine lineup includes the existing 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel units. The diesel version is expected to be paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, aimed at improving efficiency.
Toyota is expected to make the global debut of the next-generation Fortuner in late 2026. The India launch is likely to follow in 2027.
Pricing is expected to move higher than the current model, with the next-generation Fortuner positioned in a market that also includes the Skoda Kodiaq, MG Gloster and Kia Sorento.
For now, the Thailand sightings offer the clearest look yet at how Toyota is translating the Fortuner’s familiar rugged design into its next generation, with the production-spec tail-lights and squared-off rear providing some of the strongest clues about the final SUV.
