Porsche Cayenne Electric India debut: The electric SUV comes with a 113kWh battery, dual-motor all-wheel drive and two variants, with the Turbo Electric producing up to 1,156hp.

Porsche is preparing to officially debut the Cayenne Electric in India on September 30, adding an all-electric version of one of its best-known SUV nameplates to its Indian portfolio. Prices for the electric Cayenne were announced earlier, with the range starting at Rs 1.76 crore, ex-showroom, and two versions listed for the market: the Cayenne Electric and the more powerful Cayenne Turbo Electric.

The India debut brings together a sizeable battery, strong performance figures and a cabin that pushes the Cayenne further into Porsche’s digital era. Both versions use a 113kWh battery pack and a dual-electric-motor setup with all-wheel drive.

Porsche Cayenne Electric range and performance

In standard form, the Porsche Cayenne Electric produces 408hp and 835Nm. Porsche quotes a 0-100kph time of 4.8 seconds, an electronically limited top speed of 230kph and a claimed driving range of 642km.

The Cayenne Turbo Electric takes performance considerably further. It develops 1,156hp and 1,150Nm, can accelerate from 0-100kph in 2.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 260kph. Its claimed range stands at 623km.

Adaptive air suspension is standard on both variants, while rear-axle steering is available as an option.

One of the more unusual elements of the Cayenne Electric is its energy recuperation capability. Porsche says the SUV can recover energy at up to 600kW under regenerative braking, depending on factors including vehicle speed, temperature and battery charge level. The company also claims that the electric motors can handle as much as 97 percent of braking in appropriate conditions.

The Cayenne Electric is also offered with an optional 11kW wireless charging system, which the report describes as a first for a Porsche.

Familiar Cayenne shape, but designed around an EV

Porsche has retained the broad Cayenne silhouette, but the electric model receives several visual changes.

At the front, there is a closed-off grille accompanied by air vents positioned on either side of the bumper for cooling the battery and electrical hardware. Active aerodynamic vents are also positioned lower down. The SUV can be specified with 20-inch to 22-inch alloy wheels, while gloss-black cladding runs along the lower section of the body.

At the rear, Porsche has used a full-width LED light bar with illuminated Porsche lettering. The Cayenne Turbo Electric receives a body-coloured skid plate, while the standard Cayenne Electric uses an all-black treatment.

The electric Cayenne measures 4,985mm in length, making it 55mm longer than the combustion-engined Cayenne mentioned in the report. It is 1,980mm wide and 1,674mm tall, with a 3,023mm wheelbase.

Practicality has also been built into the package. Porsche quotes a 90-litre front luggage compartment, or frunk, along with a 781-litre rear boot. Folding the powered rear seats increases rear luggage capacity to 1,588 litres.

Porsche Cayenne Electric interior gets larger digital screens

The cabin introduces a more screen-focused layout. The Cayenne Electric gets a digital driver’s display and a 14.5-inch curved infotainment touchscreen, described as a first for a Porsche model in India. Buyers can also choose an optional 14.9-inch passenger display and an augmented-reality head-up display.

The equipment list includes eight-way electrically adjustable front seats, with higher-spec 18-way adjustable seats available as an upgrade. Four-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and wireless phone charging are also listed.

A 14-speaker Bose sound system comes as standard, while a 20-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available optionally.

Cayenne name has a long-standing presence in India

The Cayenne badge itself is not new to the Indian market. Porsche India launched an updated combustion-engined Cayenne in the country in December 2014, when the SUV was offered in Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S Diesel, Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo forms, with prices beginning at Rs 1.04 crore, ex-showroom Delhi.

That earlier line-up reflected a very different phase of the Cayenne’s development, with diesel, V6 and V8 engines forming the core of the range. The 2014 Cayenne S, for example, used a 3.6-litre bi-turbo V6 producing 420bhp and 550Nm, while the Cayenne Turbo was powered by a 4.8-litre bi-turbo V8 producing 520bhp and 750Nm.

The arrival of the Cayenne Electric therefore gives the nameplate an entirely different technical identity in India, replacing combustion-engine performance in this version with a large battery, dual electric motors and high-output regenerative braking.

The Porsche Cayenne Electric price in India starts at Rs 1.76 crore, ex-showroom, with the line-up extending to the Turbo Electric variant. The electric SUV is positioned against models including the Audi Q8 e-tron, BMW iX and Lotus Eletre in India.

With its September 30 debut, the focus will now shift from the specifications already announced to the Cayenne Electric’s formal introduction to Indian customers.
