A 13-yard Patrick Mahomes pass to Travis Kelce gave Kansas City a touchdown. The television cutaway that followed gave the internet something entirely different: a new reaction meme built around Taylor Swift pointing to her ring and celebrating her husband.
For a few seconds on Sunday night, the football stopped being the main attraction at Arrowhead Stadium.
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had just caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes against the Indianapolis Colts when the broadcast switched to Taylor Swift watching from a suite. Swift celebrated, pointed toward her ring finger and exclaimed, “That’s my husband!”
It was Kelce’s first touchdown of the season, according to Yahoo Sports, and it came in a game Kansas City eventually won in overtime. The Chiefs finished with a 33-30 victory over Indianapolis.
The touchdown mattered to the game. Swift’s reaction, however, quickly found a second life online.
From an NFL celebration to a joke about everyday victories
What made the clip easy to remix was its simplicity. Swift’s reaction was enthusiastic enough to work almost anywhere, while the words “That’s my husband” gave people an obvious setup: replace an NFL touchdown with a far less dramatic accomplishment and keep the celebration.
That is exactly what happened.
One of the jokes imagined the same reaction after a husband managed to carry 15 grocery bags from the car in a single trip. Another suggested earning that level of admiration simply by putting a used plate directly into the dishwasher.
Making the bed and arranging the decorative pillows correctly became another mock achievement. So did opening a stubborn can of salsa. One post flipped the format slightly, using Swift’s reaction for a partner who took the dog outside in the morning so the other person could remain in bed.
Even buying Eras Tour tickets made the cut, with one user joking about a wife celebrating after a seven-hour wait in a Ticketmaster queue.
The humor was not really about football anymore. The clip had become shorthand for exaggerated appreciation of the small, oddly specific things couples notice about each other.
The Kansas City Star also highlighted versions built around mowing the lawn and bringing in groceries, noting that Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas joined the online fun as the format spread.
The memes moved beyond ‘That’s my husband’
Social media users also found material in Swift’s expressions before the touchdown.
Her intense reaction while watching the play unfold was compared with Muhammad Sarim Akhtar, the Pakistani cricket spectator whose disappointed expression during the 2019 Australia-Pakistan match became a widely used reaction image.
Yet another comparison drawn from The Blind Side, as users saw Swift embodying the frustrations expressed in the movie and telling everyone to stop using tricks and run with the ball already.
This contributed to giving the scene a unique second dimension. One meme format was created by celebrating Kelce’s scoring, and another one came from Swift’s anticipation of the goal.
The setting helped make the sequence unusually usable online. There was a consequential play, a clear television close-up and an unmistakable gesture toward Swift’s wedding ring. The entire reaction could be understood even after being detached from the game itself.
Swift had returned to Arrowhead Stadium for the Sept. 20 matchup against Indianapolis after also attending Kansas City’s earlier game against Denver. But this time, it was one spontaneous reaction rather than her presence alone that drove the conversation.
And perhaps that explains why the joke traveled so quickly. Kelce needed an NFL touchdown to receive the original celebration. On social media, apparently, loading the dishwasher correctly was enough.
