Apple’s next iPhone launch could look very different from the company’s usual September rollout. Instead of introducing a broad range of new devices at once, the upcoming lineup is expected to focus on just three premium models: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the reportedly foldable iPhone Ultra.

The shift would put Apple’s highest-end hardware at the centre of its next launch cycle, while the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 are reportedly being pushed into early 2027. The three-model lineup expected for September marks a notable change from the more familiar mix of Pro and mainstream devices.

iPhone 18 Pro Max could bring a smaller Dynamic Island and stronger battery life

Among the expected upgrades, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is tipped to receive a 35% smaller Dynamic Island, giving the front of the device a more streamlined appearance.

The Pro lineup is also rumoured to introduce Apple’s A20 Pro chip, along with camera improvements led by a Main camera featuring variable aperture. Other expected changes include a redesigned Camera Control, Apple’s C2 cellular modem and new satellite capabilities that could include 5G support.

Battery performance is another area where the larger Pro model could stand out. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to deliver significant battery-life gains, with the wider Pro family being positioned for what is described as its best battery performance yet. A bold burgundy finish is also among the colours reportedly being prepared for the new generation.

Taken together, the reported changes suggest that Apple may be concentrating less on a dramatic redesign and more on refining some of the areas users interact with every day, including the display cutout, camera system, connectivity and battery endurance.

Price remains one of the biggest unanswered questions

Pricing for the next Pro generation is still uncertain.

The iPhone 18 Pro has been linked with a higher starting price. One estimate cited in the reporting places it at $1,399, although a range closer to $1,199 or $1,249 is also considered possible. No confirmed starting price for the iPhone 18 Pro Max is provided, so any precise figure for the larger model would remain speculative at this stage.

That uncertainty becomes particularly important because Apple’s expected September lineup could be unusually concentrated at the premium end of the market.

iPhone Ultra could become Apple’s first foldable iPhone

The biggest departure from Apple’s existing iPhone design may come from the third model.

The iPhone Ultra is the rumoured name for Apple’s first foldable iPhone and is expected to occupy a new tier above the traditional Pro range. Its price is currently expected to exceed $2,000.

The device is tipped to use a book-style folding design with an outer display measuring roughly 5.4 inches and an inner screen of about 7.8 inches. The larger display is expected to create an experience closer in scale to an iPad mini when unfolded.

Its construction could borrow cues from the iPhone Air, including a titanium border and a thinner-looking design. The camera arrangement is expected to include two rear cameras, Main and Ultra Wide, as well as two front-facing cameras, with one positioned for each display.

Unlike the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the foldable model is expected to use Touch ID rather than Face ID for authentication.

Apple could use software to make the foldable form factor more useful

Hardware will only be part of the story if the iPhone Ultra arrives as expected.

iOS 27 is reportedly being designed to support side-by-side app multitasking and adaptive landscape layouts on the foldable device. Those software changes could allow the larger internal display to take advantage of its additional screen space rather than simply presenting a stretched version of the traditional iPhone interface.

Performance is expected to remain close to the Pro models. The foldable is tipped to use the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro, alongside a vapor chamber cooling system and Apple’s C2 modem.

The regular iPhone 18 may have to wait until 2027

The most unusual part of the expected launch may be what Apple does not introduce in September.

The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 are reportedly being moved to early 2027 instead of arriving alongside the new Pro devices. The reason for the change remains unclear. The reporting notes that it is not known whether the decision is entirely strategic or connected to the current memory supply situation.

If that schedule holds, Apple’s September iPhone launch would consist entirely of premium hardware, leaving the company’s more affordable next-generation models for a later release window.

For buyers watching the top of Apple’s lineup, that would make the iPhone 18 Pro Max one of the central devices of the launch, while the iPhone Ultra could test how far Apple is prepared to stretch the iPhone beyond its familiar slab-style design.

None of these specifications, prices or release plans should be treated as final until Apple officially announces the devices. For now, the reported lineup points to a September focused less on the number of new iPhones and more on how far Apple can push its most expensive models.
