Toyota appears to be moving closer to introducing the next-generation Fortuner, with a heavily camouflaged test vehicle spotted undergoing road testing in Thailand. The latest sighting offers a closer look at the rear section of the popular SUV, revealing several design changes that could make their way into the production version.
While the SUV remains largely covered in camouflage, the visible details suggest that Toyota is preparing a substantial exterior update rather than a minor cosmetic refresh. The new rear lighting arrangement, redesigned tailgate and rugged bumper are among the notable changes spotted on the test vehicle.
The latest development follows an earlier sighting in February, when the front section of the next-generation Fortuner was spotted testing overseas. Together, the sightings have offered an initial picture of what buyers can expect from the upcoming model.
2026 Toyota Fortuner Rear Design: New LED Taillights Spotted
The rear section is the biggest highlight of the latest spy shots. The test vehicle features LED taillights that appear to extend towards both sides of the SUV. There is also a visible bulge within the taillight assembly, which could indicate the presence of a connecting light bar.
However, the camouflage makes it difficult to confirm whether the light bar will be part of the final production design.
Other visible elements include a subtle roof-mounted spoiler, a rear wiper and a shark-fin antenna. The tailgate also appears to have been redesigned, while the partially visible rear bumper suggests a more rugged appearance.
At the front, earlier sightings have pointed towards eyebrow-shaped LED daytime running lights, a large grille, a revised bumper and a split LED headlamp arrangement. The upcoming Fortuner is also expected to adopt a more upright front profile and a squarer rear design.
These changes could give the next-generation SUV a more pronounced road presence while retaining its familiar large-SUV proportions.
2026 Toyota Fortuner Interior and Features: What to Expect
The cabin is another area where Toyota is expected to introduce significant changes. Taking cues from the ninth-generation Toyota Hilux, the next-generation Fortuner could receive a completely redesigned and more premium interior.
Expected equipment includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. If introduced, the two large displays would mark a notable technology upgrade for the SUV.
The feature list could also include enhanced driver assistance systems, an electrically powered steering system and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
However, Toyota has not officially confirmed these features for the upcoming Fortuner. The final equipment list is expected to become clearer closer to its unveiling.
2026 Toyota Fortuner Engine and Transmission Options
Despite the expected exterior and interior changes, the next-generation Fortuner could continue with the existing engine options.
The current model is offered with a 2.8-litre diesel engine, available with manual and automatic transmission options, alongside a 2.7-litre petrol engine paired with an automatic gearbox.
Toyota has also revealed the ninth-generation Hilux with multiple powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell configurations. However, this does not necessarily mean that the upcoming Fortuner will receive the same range of engines.
For now, the expectation is that Toyota will retain the existing Fortuner powertrain options, although the company has yet to confirm its plans for the next-generation SUV.
When Will the New Toyota Fortuner Launch?
The latest testing activity in Thailand indicates that development of the next-generation Fortuner is continuing. However, Toyota has not officially announced its launch timeline or confirmed the complete specifications of the upcoming SUV.
With the front and rear design details gradually emerging through spy sightings, attention will now turn towards the interior, powertrain and final feature list. More details about the next-generation Toyota Fortuner are likely to emerge as testing progresses.
