Tax Audit Deadline Extended: CBDT has given taxpayers and businesses covered by audit requirements additional time to complete their compliance for Assessment Year 2026-27. The tax audit report deadline has moved from September 30 to October 21, 2026, while the income tax return filing deadline for the relevant audit cases has been extended from October 31 to November 21, 2026.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended two important income tax deadlines for Assessment Year 2026-27, giving businesses, professionals and other taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited more time to complete their filings.
The tax audit deadline for AY 2026-27 is now October 21, 2026, instead of September 30. The corresponding ITR filing due date for taxpayers covered by the extension is November 21, 2026, compared with the earlier deadline of October 31.
The change gives eligible taxpayers an additional 21 days for both stages of the compliance process.
The extension applies to persons covered by the relevant audit-linked return filing provisions under Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961. The CBDT’s announcement states that the return filing date for the specified category has been shifted from October 31 to November 21, while the associated “specified date” for furnishing the tax audit report has moved from September 30 to October 21.
Tax audit due date 2026: What are the new deadlines?
For taxpayers searching for the new tax audit due date for AY 2026-27, the revised dates are straightforward:
| Compliance requirement | Earlier deadline | New deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Tax Audit Report for applicable cases | September 30, 2026 | October 21, 2026 |
| ITR filing for covered audit cases | October 31, 2026 | November 21, 2026 |
The revised deadlines were announced on September 28, 2026.
The extension is significant because the tax audit report generally comes before the income tax return for taxpayers whose books are subject to audit. The additional time therefore gives taxpayers and their chartered accountants a longer window to complete audits, reconcile financial information and finish the return-filing process.
Who gets the November 21 ITR filing deadline?
The November 21 deadline covers the category of taxpayers whose return-filing date was earlier October 31, 2026 and who fall within the scope of the CBDT extension.
Transfer pricing cases need closer attention
The extension should not be read as a blanket change to every tax deadline falling in the same compliance cycle.
The material specifically records that the ITR deadline for transfer pricing cases remains November 30, 2026, while the deadline for Form 3CEB remains October 31, 2026. Both are shown as having received no extension.
Taxmann’s Naveen Wadhwa also noted that the extension does not cover taxpayers required to file Form 3CEB for transfer pricing purposes.
Taxpayers should therefore check which compliance category applies to them instead of assuming that every AY 2026-27 filing date has automatically moved.
Why the tax audit deadline extension matters
Tax audits can involve substantial reconciliation between books of account, financial statements, tax records and information required in audit forms.
Several chartered accountant associations and tax professionals had sought additional time, citing the workload involved in completing audits and reconciling financial and tax information.
The extension provides a wider window to finish that work before the audit report is submitted.
How is a tax audit report filed?
For taxpayers subject to tax audit, the report is not simply uploaded by the taxpayer personally.
The chartered accountant appointed for the audit uploads the applicable tax audit report through the Income Tax e-Filing portal. After the CA submits and verifies the report, it appears in the taxpayer’s account for acceptance. The taxpayer must then review, accept and e-verify the report before the filing process is completed.
The process described involves assigning the CA through the portal, the CA accepting the assignment, preparing and uploading the applicable form, and the taxpayer subsequently accepting the uploaded report.
Taxpayers can also check the status of the report through the Pending Actions → Worklist → Pending for Acceptance section of the e-Filing portal.
Extra time does not mean compliance should be left to the last day
The extension creates breathing room, but tax professionals cited in the material have advised taxpayers to use the additional period for completing reconciliations and correcting pending issues rather than simply shifting the same work closer to the new deadline.
A CA said taxpayers whose tax liability has already been determined should consider paying it at the earliest because delays in payment may continue to attract applicable interest. He suggested treating the extension as an opportunity to complete filings accurately rather than merely postponing compliance.
The question of interest under Section 234A requires particular care. Wadhwa noted that the press release itself was silent on how Section 234A interest would operate in relation to the revised deadline, and said the position would depend on the wording of the formal order.
CBDT tax audit deadline extension: Key dates to remember
October 21, 2026: Revised deadline for furnishing the tax audit report in the covered cases.
November 21, 2026: Revised ITR filing deadline for the corresponding taxpayers whose earlier due date was October 31.
The change gives taxpayers and professionals three additional weeks to complete a compliance cycle that often requires both financial reconciliation and coordination between the taxpayer and the auditor.
For transfer pricing and other specialised cases, however, separate deadlines continue to apply, making it important to identify the correct filing category before relying on the extension.
