Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game PHYSINT has found a new publishing partner in Xbox, bringing an unexpected turn to a project that only months ago was set to be developed in partnership with PlayStation.

The change did not happen overnight. Kojima Productions was informed by PlayStation Studios in mid-June 2026 that the company would end its involvement with PHYSINT. Kojima then spent roughly three months looking for another partner before reaching an agreement with Xbox, a detail that offers a clearer picture of how close the project came to losing its original publishing arrangement.

The move also significantly expands the existing relationship between Kojima Productions and Microsoft. Xbox is already publishing OD, Kojima Productions’ upcoming horror project, and PHYSINT will now become another major game developed with Xbox as publishing partner.

PlayStation informed Kojima Productions in June

Kojima said his studio unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios in the middle of June that the PHYSINT project would be cancelled under their partnership.

Rather than abandoning the game, Kojima Productions began looking for another company willing to back it.

Kojima described PHYSINT as personally important to both himself and the studio and said the team spent the following three months seeking advice, holding negotiations and searching for a new partner. That process ultimately led the company back to Xbox.

Development of PHYSINT is continuing following the change. Kojima has reiterated that the project remains an action-espionage title and that his studio intends to keep pushing ahead with it under the new arrangement.

The sequence is important because the public announcements arrived close together, while the decision itself had been developing behind the scenes for months. PlayStation’s withdrawal dates back to June, followed by Kojima Productions’ search for a replacement and, eventually, the Xbox agreement.

PlayStation says its relationship with Hideo Kojima remains intact

PlayStation said it made the decision to step away from PHYSINT after “careful consideration.”

Despite ending its involvement in this particular project, the company stressed that it continues to respect Kojima’s creative vision and said its relationship with Kojima Productions remains strong after decades of collaboration. PlayStation also indicated that it expects to continue working with Kojima and his independent studio in the future.

That distinction matters. The PHYSINT decision ends one collaboration, but the statements released around the change do not describe it as a complete break between Kojima Productions and PlayStation.

Kojima has a long history with PlayStation, including the more recent Death Stranding franchise, which makes PHYSINT’s shift to Xbox especially notable.

Xbox deepens its partnership with Kojima Productions

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma welcomed the PHYSINT agreement, saying creators should have choices about where and how their ideas are brought to life.

Sharma said Xbox was honoured that Kojima had chosen the company to work with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT, pointing to his willingness to challenge conventions as the kind of creativity Xbox wants to support.

For Kojima Productions, the deal means its Xbox relationship now stretches beyond OD.

Kojima said the expanded partnership would continue as development moves forward on PHYSINT, with the studio maintaining its ambition to redefine the action-espionage genre.

OD currently does not have a launch date. PHYSINT is positioned as the Kojima Productions title expected after OD, although no release date for PHYSINT was announced in the material surrounding the publishing change.

Wccftech also notes that Kojima had previously indicated in May 2025 that PHYSINT could still be another five to six years from completion, suggesting the publishing switch is taking place at a relatively early stage of what remains a long development process.

The Xbox relationship will go beyond video games

The agreement is not limited to PHYSINT.

Xbox and Kojima Productions also plan to explore projects in film and television, extending their collaboration beyond games. The companies have not yet announced specific TV or film titles connected to the expanded partnership.

That broader arrangement gives the PHYSINT move another dimension. Xbox is not simply taking over the publishing role for a single game. The companies are discussing a wider creative relationship spanning multiple forms of entertainment.

For now, however, PHYSINT remains the centrepiece of the announcement.

The clearest takeaway is that the project survived a potentially disruptive publishing change. PlayStation’s decision in June forced Kojima Productions to search for a new home, but three months later the studio had secured Xbox as its new partner and confirmed that development would continue.

What has changed is the company standing behind the project. What has not changed, according to Kojima, is his intention to build PHYSINT as the action-espionage game Kojima Productions originally set out to make.
