Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is facing early reports of inner-screen damage, with a teardown pointing to a possible weak spot in the hinge mechanism. Some users have claimed that their displays developed cracks or bright lines within hours of using the device, raising questions about how the foldable handles repeated opening and closing.
The reports have emerged just days after the iPhone Duo went on sale. However, the incidents appear to involve a limited number of devices, and there is no evidence that the problem affects most owners.
A teardown by repair website iFixit offers a possible explanation. Its analysis suggests that the area where the hinge structure meets the opening for the cable connecting the phone’s two halves could be a point of concentrated stress. The findings identify potential design-related causes, but they do not establish a definitive reason for the reported failures.
What Could Be Causing iPhone Duo’s Inner Screen to Crack?
To investigate the reports, iFixit built a 3D model of the iPhone Duo’s hinge using teardown footage, patents and CT scans. The team compared the model with the locations where users had reported display damage.
The analysis found that the reported failures clustered near the transition between the gap accommodating the crossing flex cable and the central hinge support.
One possible explanation involves the central support bar. If it does not retract far enough when the phone closes, the curved section of the inner display could press against it. That contact may create a concentrated stress point in an area that already experiences movement during folding.
Unlike a conventional smartphone display, the iPhone Duo’s inner screen bends inward when the device closes. The curved section is also associated with the visible crease found on foldable phones.
The teardown identified another potential issue involving the curved rails that guide the hinge. These rails rise above nearby flat components as the phone folds. If their movement does not occur as intended, they could interfere with the display.

Several structural edges also meet near the reported damage zone. Their proximity could concentrate pressure on the screen’s thin layers, potentially making the area more vulnerable to damage.
Why a Display Could Fail Even Without a Visible Crack
Physical damage may not be the only explanation for the reported screen problems.
According to iFixit’s analysis, a local fault in the display’s electrical connections could disrupt an entire row or column of pixels, even if the screen does not appear to have suffered a complete physical break.
This could help explain why some reported failures involve bright lines across the display rather than an obviously shattered screen.
However, the teardown presents these scenarios as possible explanations, not confirmed defects. Further investigation would be needed to determine whether the reports stem from a common design weakness, individual component failures or another cause.
iPhone Duo Display Replacement Could Cost Rs 1.49 Lakh
Apple is reportedly offering free replacement devices to iPhone Duo owners who experience these display issues. The availability of such replacements may be important for early buyers, particularly given the potential cost of repairing the foldable outside its warranty.
An out-of-warranty inner-display repair is reported to cost Rs 1,49,900. That is a substantial expense for a device that already carries a premium price.
In India, the iPhone Duo starts at Rs 2,99,900 for the 256GB model. The 2TB variant costs Rs 4,49,900.
The high repair cost makes the reported hinge-related failures particularly concerning for buyers. Still, the limited number of reported cases means it would be premature to conclude that the iPhone Duo has a widespread display reliability problem.
iPhone Duo Scores 5 Out of 10 for Repairability
Despite the potential hinge concerns, iFixit’s teardown found some positives in the phone’s design.
During a fluorescent dust test, relatively few particles reached the device’s internal components. Some dust did enter the hinge and caused a crunching sound, but the iPhone Duo collected less visible dust than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold in similar tests.
The device also carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Another finding concerned the nano-texture cover on the inner display. iFixit found that this layer could be removed without preventing the phone from functioning normally. However, removing it made the display’s crease more noticeable.
These findings suggest that the iPhone Duo has some repair-friendly features, even though its folding mechanism remains complicated.
iFixit awarded the device a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, describing it as the most repairable foldable smartphone the team had examined so far. The website also stressed that repairing it would still be difficult.
High Prices and Long Waits Add to iPhone Duo Concerns
The reported display failures come at a time when buyers may already have to contend with limited availability. Some customers could face waits of several weeks before their devices ship, while certain retailers are reportedly asking for an additional Rs 1 lakh over Apple’s official price.
For a smartphone costing between Rs 2,99,900 and Rs 4,49,900, concerns about screen durability and repair expenses could influence purchasing decisions.
For now, iFixit’s teardown provides a possible explanation for the early reports rather than proof of a widespread manufacturing or design defect. The key question is whether further cases emerge around the same hinge area and whether Apple identifies a common cause.
Until that becomes clearer, the reported failures should be treated cautiously. The iPhone Duo’s repairability score offers some reassurance, but it does not eliminate the uncertainty surrounding the durability of its inner display.
