New Delhi: In a move aimed at simplifying day-one banking for founders, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kotak Mahindra Bank to extend tailored financial support to startups. The development was shared publicly by Sanjiv Singh, Joint Secretary (Startups).

What the collaboration offers?

According to the information shared, Kotak Mahindra Bank will provide a dedicated bundle of services designed for early-stage companies:

  • Zero-balance current accounts
  • Easier access to loans and credit
  • Digital payment tools
  • API-based platforms
  • Startup cards
The Significance

Founders frequently cite banking friction and delayed access to working capital as early hurdles. By pairing zero-balance accounts with streamlined routes to credit and digital rails, the DPIIT–Kotak tie-up is positioned to reduce start-up costs and improve financial readiness from incorporation to initial scale-up. The initiative aligns with the larger national objective of accelerating India’s journey toward Viksit Bharat @ 2047.

The policy signal

The MoU underscores a policy direction that emphasizes:

  • Ease of doing business for startups: Banking set-up that matches a startup’s pace.
  • Credit enablement: Making formal credit channels more reachable for young companies.
  • Digital-first operations: Encouraging API-ready, tool-based financial workflows from the outset.
What founders should look for next

While detailed operating guidelines were not included in the public note, startups can watch for:

  • Enrollment and onboarding steps for the zero-balance account
  • Specifics on loan and credit access criteria
  • Applicable features and limits on startup cards
  • Integration paths for API-based banking tools

By combining policy intent with a large private-sector bank’s product suite, the DPIIT, Kotak MoU is designed to lower early banking friction and improve access to capital, key ingredients for faster experimentation and growth in India’s startup ecosystem.
