Nike’s first signature basketball shoe for Caitlin Clark has made an immediate impression, with most sizes selling out within minutes of its official release on October 1, 2026.
Caitlin 1, which was developed with the Indiana Fever guard, was launched at 10:00 am (ET) in two colorways: Caitlin Blue and Warning Code, the latter being in the color yellow. Within five minutes from its launch, most sizes were out of stock, demonstrating high demand for the shoe made by Clark.
The release also marks a significant personal milestone for the WNBA star, who had previously collaborated with Nike on special editions of its Kobe basketball shoes, including the Kobe 5 Protro x Caitlin Clark.
However, the Caitlin 1 is more than another footwear release bearing her name. Its development involved nearly two years of collaboration with Nike’s design team, with particular attention given to how Clark moves, creates shooting space and changes direction on the basketball court.
The launch is accompanied by an 18-piece apparel collection and a marketing campaign that presents a different side of one of women’s basketball’s most recognisable players.
What Makes the Nike Caitlin 1 Different?
The Caitlin 1 was developed around a straightforward requirement from Clark: the shoe needed to support speed.
Known for her shooting range, quick step-backs and ability to create separation from defenders, Clark wanted footwear that could complement these elements of her game rather than simply serve as a personalised version of an existing Nike design.
Getting that balance right required considerable work behind the scenes.
Nike footwear designer Ben Nethongkome and members of the development team made regular trips to Indiana over approximately two years. Their visits included attending Clark’s workouts and practices and spending time with her away from basketball to understand her preferences.
The resulting sneaker incorporates several performance features intended to address her playing style.
One of its central elements is a multidirectional fanning traction pattern, designed to help players change direction quickly. Nike’s team reportedly moved away from an earlier traction concept after determining that it placed too much emphasis on appearance rather than functionality.
The shoe also features a responsive Nike Air Turbo Zoom unit that curves with the foot, supporting the lateral movements and step-backs that regularly feature in Clark’s game.
Another distinctive component is the Nike Opticast upper, which uses curved, wave-like detailing inspired by Clark’s shot chart and extensive shooting range. Beyond its visual connection to her playing style, the structure is designed to wrap around and support the front of the foot.
The design process was not limited to performance testing. Clark also wanted the finished product to reflect her personality, and certain elements were revisited even after testing had produced encouraging results.
According to Nike product line manager Alex Zerzan, Clark remained closely involved throughout the decision-making process.
A Shoe Designed Around Caitlin Clark’s Identity
While the technical construction addresses Clark’s on-court requirements, the Caitlin 1 also incorporates several details connected to her basketball journey.
The upper features references to her initials, CC, and the number 22, alongside Swoosh detailing that draws inspiration from her initials and the three-point arc.
Nike has also developed multiple colour variations of the sneaker, allowing Clark’s personal interests and creative preferences to become part of the footwear’s design.
One example is the Berry Fade edition, which Clark wore during Game 1 of the Indiana Fever’s playoff series against the Las Vegas Aces.
The design features a red-to-purple gradient, with the colour transition reversed between the left and right shoes. Clark personally requested the mirrored arrangement after reviewing the original concept.
Other designs include a colourway inspired by Taylor Swift, featuring friendship-bracelet beads on the laces, and a Kansas City Chiefs-inspired pair known as Sea of Red, which Chiefs head coach Andy Reid showcased in a video.
These variations offer a glimpse into the wider creative direction of the Caitlin 1, although specific release dates for additional colourways had not been announced at the time of the initial launch.
Why Nike Chose an Unusual Campaign for the Caitlin 1
Rather than relying entirely on basketball highlights, Nike has built the Caitlin 1’s promotional campaign around a contrast between Clark’s extraordinary performances and her relatively ordinary interests away from the sport.
Its central message, *“Nothing special to see here“**, deliberately plays with that contradiction.
The asterisk is an important part of the campaign, suggesting that there is considerably more to Clark than the understated phrase initially reveals.
Promotional visuals include a billboard near Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Indiana Fever’s home arena in Indianapolis, featuring a casual photograph of Clark relaxing on a couch.
Another advertisement shows her eating breakfast cereal shaped around her personal logo and jersey number, while a separate sequence features her packing multiple colourways of the Caitlin 1 into a suitcase.
The television advertisements are narrated by actor Nick Offerman, widely recognised for portraying Ron Swanson in the comedy series Parks and Recreation.
His signature deadpan delivery complements the campaign’s deliberately understated humour.
Speaking to ESPN, Clark explained that the concept reflects how she views herself: someone who can accomplish extraordinary things on a basketball court while enjoying everyday activities such as gardening, golfing and watching television.
The campaign also has an additional personal connection. Offerman, who is skilled in woodworking, is working on a one-of-a-kind shoe case for Clark. Actor Jason Sudeikis, a close friend of the basketball player, reportedly recommended Offerman for the advertising campaign.
Caitlin 1 Launch: Available Colours and What Buyers Should Know
The first retail release of the Caitlin 1 took place on October 1, 2026, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.
Two colourways were introduced:
- Caitlin Blue: One of the two debut editions of Clark’s signature basketball sneaker.
- Warning Code: A yellow colourway launched alongside Caitlin Blue.
Demand was immediate, with most sizes reported sold out approximately five minutes after the launch.
For shoppers who missed the initial release, availability may depend on remaining Nike inventory, subsequent releases or third-party resale platforms such as StockX.
Nike also uses its SNKRS application and official website for footwear launches, with certain high-demand releases managed through a draw-based system. However, the availability of specific Caitlin 1 sizes and future colourways remains subject to official updates.
Alongside the sneakers, Nike introduced an 18-piece Caitlin 1 apparel collection covering performance clothing and sportswear.
The range includes Aero-FIT performance essentials and new Standard Issue Stretch pieces, bringing Nike Standard Issue styling to women’s basketball players.
The collection extends the launch beyond footwear, giving consumers access to a broader selection of clothing associated with Clark’s signature line.
Why the Caitlin 1 Launch Is a Career Milestone for Clark
The arrival of the Caitlin 1 places Clark among a growing group of active WNBA players with their own signature basketball footwear.
The group includes A’ja Wilson and Sabrina Ionescu with Nike, Angel Reese with Reebok, Breanna Stewart with Puma, and Jacy Sheldon with HOLO.
For Clark, the release comes during her second WNBA season, following her selection as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and her subsequent Rookie of the Year recognition.
Her previous Nike collaborations had already demonstrated considerable consumer interest, with special Kobe-inspired releases selling out quickly. The Caitlin 1, however, introduces a footwear identity developed specifically around her playing style and preferences.
The timing also coincides with an important period for the Indiana Fever.
At the time of the sneaker launch, Indiana was preparing for a decisive Game 3 against the Las Vegas Aces in the opening round of the 2026 WNBA playoffs. The best-of-three series stood level at 1-1, with the deciding contest scheduled for October 1 in Las Vegas.
Amid that competitive backdrop, the release represents a different kind of milestone for Clark.
During the launch, she acknowledged how much work had gone into developing the sneaker, describing the prospect of having her own signature basketball shoe as something she had once never imagined.
With the first two colourways drawing rapid consumer interest and more designs awaiting release, the Caitlin 1 has begun its retail journey with a clear connection between its athlete, its performance features and the personality behind its name.
