Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously injured during a cockpit altercation aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, but the Dubai-Tel Aviv service ultimately landed safely in Saudi Arabia after a dramatic chain of events at cruising altitude.

The regular flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv became an air tragedy after violent incidents occurred in the cockpit, resulting in the injury of an Indian captain, the plane rapidly descending to the earth, and the passengers experiencing an unprecedented situation high up in the sky.

At the centre of the episode was Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot with more than 13 years of commercial flying experience.

The aircraft, operating as flydubai flight FZ1073, had departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion Airport when an altercation took place between the two pilots. Flydubai later confirmed that the flight experienced an incident and was diverted, eventually landing safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

What happened inside the cockpit is still being investigated, and some of the most dramatic details have emerged through accounts attributed to political leaders and passengers rather than a completed official investigation. However, the flight experienced a serious cockpit incident, both pilots were injured and the aircraft made an emergency diversion.

What happened aboard flydubai flight FZ1073?

The confrontation began inside the cockpit while the aircraft was travelling from Dubai towards Tel Aviv.

An Israeli official said one of the pilots was armed with a knife, while Reuters reported that the co-pilot was believed to have stabbed Captain Machchhar before cabin crew entered the cockpit. Both the captain and first officer were later taken to hospital.

The aircraft’s movements underline how serious the situation became.

The jet transmitting an emergency alert roughly two-and-a-half hours after leaving Dubai. It then descended sharply from around 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in roughly a minute, before making what was described as an erratic turn near the Jordanian border.

The precise sequence inside the cockpit remains subject to investigation.

One account of those moments came from US President Donald Trump, who said he had been briefed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump said Machchhar, despite being badly injured, managed to get the cockpit door open and call for help.

Trump went on to recount an extraordinary intervention involving an Israeli passenger whom he described as a plumber. According to that account, the passenger entered the cockpit, pulled the co-pilot away from his seat and helped bring the immediate situation under control, with other passengers assisting in restraining him. Additional pilots and security personnel who had been elsewhere on the aircraft subsequently reached the cockpit and took control.

There is an important qualification to that version of events. Trump himself said he was recounting information he had received rather than independently verified facts, adding: “I don’t know if it’s true.”

Who is Captain Smit Machchhar?

Away from the extraordinary circumstances of the flight, Machchhar has spent more than a decade flying commercial aircraft.

He is an Indian citizen and, according to his professional profile, had been working with flydubai for about four years.

Before joining the Dubai-based carrier, he spent around 10 years with SpiceJet in India. He has more than 13 years of commercial flying experience on the Boeing 737 fleet, has worked extensively as a line training captain and has accumulated more than 9,750 flying hours.

The flight involved 174 passengers, including 27 children.

From cockpit crisis to a safe landing in Saudi Arabia

Despite the violence in the cockpit and the aircraft’s sudden descent, flight FZ1073 reached the ground safely at Tabuk.

That outcome has made Machchhar the focus of international attention.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Indian pilot as a “HERO”, saying that despite being seriously injured he had shown courage and remained determined to protect others.

“His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy. India is proud of Captain Machchhar,” Modi wrote, while wishing him a speedy recovery.

Trump also referred to Machchhar as a hero while speaking about the incident. His comments followed a conversation with Netanyahu, who had also publicly praised the pilot.

For all the attention now surrounding the Indian captain, significant questions remain.

Investigators still have to establish precisely what triggered the cockpit altercation, what actions were taken by each person on board, how control of the aircraft changed hands and the exact circumstances behind its rapid loss of altitude.

Until those findings emerge, claims about motive or the complete sequence of events should be treated cautiously.
