Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, alongside its first foldable iPhone. While Apple has not yet announced an official launch date, reports have pointed to an early September event, with September 9 being one of the dates mentioned in recent reports. The company is also expected to change its iPhone launch strategy this year, with the Pro models arriving in the fall while the standard iPhone 18 models could follow later.
With the launch approaching, a growing number of leaks have revealed possible details about Apple’s next Pro Max. Here are 10 major upgrades that could make the iPhone 18 Pro Max different from its predecessor.
1. A Smaller Dynamic Island
One of the most visible changes could come to the Dynamic Island. Reports suggest Apple may move at least one Face ID component beneath the display, allowing the cutout to become smaller.
Earlier reports pointed to a major reduction in the Dynamic Island’s size, although the exact dimensions remain uncertain. The change could give the iPhone 18 Pro models a cleaner display appearance without completely removing the Dynamic Island.
2. A New 2nm A20 Pro Chip
Performance could receive one of the biggest upgrades with Apple’s expected A20 Pro chip. The processor is widely reported to be based on TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing technology, potentially making it Apple’s first 2nm iPhone chip.
The A20 Pro is also expected to use TSMC’s Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module, or WMCM, packaging. Reports suggest this design could improve the way the processor and memory are integrated, potentially benefiting performance, efficiency and thermal management.
3. Variable Aperture Could Transform the Camera
The iPhone 18 Pro Max could introduce a variable aperture for its main camera. Unlike a fixed aperture, a variable aperture can adjust the amount of light reaching the sensor.
This could give photographers greater control over exposure and depth of field. It could also help the camera manage bright scenes more effectively while improving flexibility in different lighting conditions.

4. A More Efficient LTPO+ Display
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to retain a 6.9-inch display, matching the size of the current Pro Max model. However, reports suggest Apple could introduce an upgraded LTPO+ panel.
The newer display technology is expected to focus on improved power efficiency, potentially helping the larger iPhone deliver longer battery life without changing its screen size.
5. A Larger Battery for Longer Endurance
Battery life could also receive a substantial boost. Recent reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max may have a battery nearly 10% larger than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Some reports have also pointed to a battery capacity exceeding 5,000mAh. However, the exact capacity has not been confirmed, so the final number could differ from current leaks.
6. Dark Cherry Could Replace Orange
Apple may introduce a new colour option for its Pro models. A Dark Cherry finish has repeatedly appeared in reports, alongside Light Blue, Dark Gray and Silver.
At the same time, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue, which are associated with the current generation, are reportedly set to be discontinued. The final colour lineup will only be confirmed when Apple officially unveils the devices.
7. A Thicker Pro Max Design
The larger battery and additional internal hardware could result in a thicker iPhone 18 Pro Max. Reports have suggested that Apple may use the additional internal space for battery capacity and improved thermal management.
However, the exact thickness and weight remain uncertain, with different reports offering different estimates. Therefore, specific figures such as a 9mm thickness or 240-gram weight should be treated cautiously until the phone is officially announced.
8. Apple’s C2 Modem
Apple is expected to continue its move away from Qualcomm with a new in-house C2 modem for the iPhone 18 Pro models.
The modem is expected to improve integration between Apple’s hardware and software while potentially delivering efficiency benefits. Apple has already begun replacing Qualcomm modems with its own designs, making the C2 a natural next step in that transition.
9. Expanded 5G Satellite Connectivity
Another major connectivity upgrade could involve satellite-based 5G. Reports suggest the C2 modem may support 5G NR-NTN, or New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks.
If introduced as reported, the technology could allow the iPhone to connect to satellite networks in situations where traditional cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity is unavailable. The feature is still unconfirmed by Apple.
10. A Simpler Camera Control
Apple could also simplify the Camera Control button on the iPhone 18 Pro models. Reports suggest the company may remove its touch-sensitive layer and haptic feedback while retaining pressure sensitivity.
The change could make the control more straightforward by focusing on its physical functions rather than the additional touch-based gestures currently available.
What Could Make the iPhone 18 Pro Max Stand Out
Taken together, the reported upgrades point toward a Pro Max focused on performance, camera flexibility, battery life and connectivity rather than a complete redesign. The 2nm A20 Pro chip, smaller Dynamic Island, variable aperture camera, larger battery and C2 modem could represent the most significant changes.
However, all of these specifications remain subject to change until Apple officially unveils the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. For now, September remains the expected launch window for Apple’s next-generation Pro iPhones.
