Netflix has cancelled Ransom Canyon after two seasons, bringing the Texas-set romantic drama starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly to an end.

The decision came roughly seven weeks after Season 2 premiered on July 23. Netflix has not detailed a specific reason for the cancellation, but the show’s performance gives a fairly clear picture of the factors that may have worked against a third season.

Ransom Canyon Season 2 suffered a major viewership drop

Season 2 attracted 4.1 million views in its first week, compared with 7.2 million views for Season 1’s opening week in 2025.

That represents a 43 percent decline between the two premieres.

The second season also had a shorter run in Netflix’s weekly Top 10. Season 2 remained on the list for three weeks, while Season 1 lasted four. The return did generate enough interest to push the first season back into the Top 10 for one week, but the new episodes themselves faded from the ranking sooner.

The warning signs were already there after Season 1

Ransom Canyon had not been an automatic renewal the first time around.

Following what Deadline described as respectable but not massive Season 1 viewing, Netflix took more than two months to order Season 2. The second season was also reduced from 10 episodes to eight and arrived with broader creative changes, including adjustments to the supporting cast.

That suggests Netflix was already watching the show’s performance closely before Season 2 arrived.

So why was Ransom Canyon cancelled?

Based on the available reporting, these are the strongest possibilities:

  • Season 2 opened significantly lower than Season 1. A 43 percent drop, from 7.2 million to 4.1 million first-week views, was the clearest negative performance signal.
  • The show lost Top 10 momentum faster. Season 2 remained in Netflix’s weekly Top 10 for three weeks instead of the four achieved by Season 1.
  • Cost may have worked against another renewal. Deadline reported that Netflix weighs performance against cost and described Ransom Canyon as having a considerable budget because of its marquee-name leads. Season 2’s audience was likely not large enough to make another season attractive under that calculation.
  • Season 2 was already effectively a second chance. Netflix had previously delayed the renewal, reduced the episode order and reworked parts of the series before bringing it back. The weaker Season 2 performance may have made a third investment harder to justify.

Importantly, the 43 percent fall alone does not automatically explain the cancellation. Other Netflix shows have received third seasons despite comparable or larger year-over-year drops, meaning the decision was likely based on the show’s overall performance and economics rather than one number in isolation.

Was Season 2 considered a creative failure?

Apparently not.

Deadline reported that the second season was better received internally following its creative reset and other changes. The problem was that improved internal reception did not come with a stronger audience.

That makes viewership and economics more plausible explanations than dissatisfaction with the creative direction.

Will Ransom Canyon Season 3 happen?

Under Netflix’s current decision, there will be no Season 3.

At least the show does not end with its central couple completely unresolved. Staten Kirkland and Quinn O’Grady reunited by the end of Season 2, giving their relationship a more settled ending than the Season 1 finale.

There were still possible stories waiting for another season. The finale suggested a potential love triangle involving Ellie and left room for a larger role for Staten’s half-brother Levi, played by Steve Howey.

Ransom Canyon returned with a smaller audience, spent less time in Netflix’s Top 10 and entered its renewal decision with the economics of another season working against it.
