A Delta Air Lines flight travelling from Barcelona to Boston made an emergency landing in Porto, Portugal, on Sunday after smoke was reported inside the cabin.
Delta Flight DL251 was diverted to Porto following what the airline described as a reported mechanical issue. The Airbus A330 landed safely at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, bringing the transatlantic journey to an unexpected stop before the aircraft could continue towards Boston.
The incident required a medical response on the ground. Eight passengers were treated on the tarmac at Porto airport, while three others were taken to hospital for further treatment, according to Portugal’s emergency and civil protection authority.
Why was Delta Flight DL251 diverted to Porto?
Two details emerged in the initial accounts of the incident.
Delta said Flight DL251 was diverted after a reported mechanical issue. Portuguese emergency authorities, meanwhile, said the forced landing was linked to smoke in the cabin. Neither account provided a more specific explanation for what produced the smoke or the nature of the mechanical problem.
While smoke was confirmed as the reason behind the forced landing, where it came from or what component, if any, malfunctioned remains unknown.
Delta flight left Barcelona before diverting to Portugal
Flight tracking information cited in the reporting showed that DL251 departed Barcelona at around 3:15 p.m. local time and landed in Porto at approximately 5:45 p.m.
The flight had been scheduled to travel from Barcelona to Boston Logan International Airport. Instead, the Airbus A330 came down in Porto after the problem developed during the journey.
A separate account of the incident said the mechanical issue was reported about two and a half hours after takeoff, after which the aircraft made the emergency landing in Portugal.
Eleven passengers received medical attention
The most significant consequence of the incident was the number of passengers requiring medical attention after the aircraft landed.
Emergency personnel treated eight passengers at the airport, while three people were transported to hospital. Portuguese authorities confirmed those figures following the landing.
