GTA6 Launch: Grand Theft Auto VI is set to arrive on November 19, but Xbox Game Pass subscribers should not expect Rockstar Games’ next blockbuster to be waiting in the subscription library on release day.
Players hoping an Xbox Game Pass membership would offer a cheaper route into GTA 6 at launch will still need to buy the game outright. The title will not be included with Xbox Game Pass when it releases, and the same subscription route will not provide PC players with launch-day access either.
That makes the November 19 release a straightforward purchase decision for anyone determined to play from day one. The report states that launch access will require buying the game and playing it on an Xbox or PlayStation console.
Could GTA 6 come to Xbox Game Pass later?
There is no confirmed date for GTA 6 to join Game Pass after launch.
There is, however, precedent for the Grand Theft Auto series appearing on Microsoft’s subscription service. Grand Theft Auto V has been available through Xbox Game Pass several times, including in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025. Those appearances generally lasted only a few months before the game left the catalogue again. Its most recent Game Pass run ended on April 15, 2026.
That history keeps the possibility of a future GTA 6 Game Pass appearance open, but it offers little guidance on how quickly that might happen.
GTA V itself provides a reminder that the wait can be substantial. The game originally released in 2013, while its first Xbox Game Pass appearance came more than six and a half years later.
In other words, GTA 6 reaching Game Pass at some point would not be unprecedented, but there is currently no basis for putting a date on it.
Take-Two has previously questioned day-one subscription releases
The absence of GTA 6 from Game Pass at launch also fits with comments previously made by Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive.
Speaking during a GamesIndustry.biz live event in 2022, Zelnick said the company had supported subscription services but remained sceptical about putting major console releases into subscription libraries on the same day they go on sale.
He argued that making frontline console products available “day and date” through subscriptions did not make economic sense for Take-Two’s properties.
Those comments do not establish a future policy for GTA 6, but they provide useful context for why a launch-day Game Pass release should not have been assumed.
Game Pass itself is not a guarantee of day-one access
Xbox Game Pass combines online console multiplayer access with a rotating catalogue of games, with the exact selection depending on the subscription tier. The report notes that the $22.99-per-month Game Pass Ultimate plan includes more than 500 titles and some launch-day releases.
But major games do not automatically enter the service when they launch. Some popular titles arrive only later, while others may never become part of the catalogue.
For GTA 6, the answer is therefore clear for November 19: a Game Pass subscription will not replace buying the game.
What happens after launch is far less certain. GTA V’s repeated appearances prove that Rockstar titles can eventually find their way into the service, but its six-and-a-half-year gap before the first inclusion also shows why subscribers should not treat that possibility as a timetable.
For players who want to enter GTA 6 the moment it releases, waiting for Game Pass is not currently a launch-day option.
