Emirates EK31 travelling from Dubai to London Heathrow was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Frankfurt on Thursday, October 1, after a passenger suffered a medical emergency mid-flight.

Flight EK31 had departed Dubai International Airport (DXB) at 11:25 am local time before its journey was interrupted. The aircraft transmitted squawk code 7700, an internationally recognised signal used to indicate a general aviation emergency, and diverted towards Frankfurt Airport instead of continuing to its scheduled destination in London.

Emirates subsequently clarified that the diversion was prompted by a passenger requiring medical attention.

Cabin Crew Assisted Passenger Before Frankfurt Landing

Confirming the circumstances surrounding the diversion, an Emirates spokesperson said the airline’s cabin crew had provided assistance to the affected passenger while the aircraft was still airborne. Medical support was also arranged ahead of its arrival in Frankfurt.

“Our cabin crew provided assistance during the flight, and medical support was arranged on arrival. The aircraft landed safely in Frankfurt, where the passenger disembarked to receive further medical attention,” the spokesperson said.

The airline did not provide further details about the passenger’s medical condition or the nature of the emergency.

Flight Tracking Data Captures EK31’s Change of Course

The diversion also drew attention on flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, which reported that EK31 had transmitted the emergency code and was descending near Frankfurt.

In an update posted on October 1, the tracking service stated: “#EK31 from Dubai to London squawking 7700 and descending near Frankfurt.”

An accompanying flight-path image showed the aircraft changing its original course towards the German airport.

Although code 7700 is used to communicate a general emergency, Emirates’ subsequent statement established that the alert in this instance was connected to a passenger’s medical condition.

Emirates EK31 Expected to Resume Journey to Heathrow at 6 PM

Following the safe landing in Frankfurt and the passenger’s disembarkation, Emirates indicated that flight EK31 was expected to resume its journey to London Heathrow at approximately 6 pm local time.

The airline also acknowledged the inconvenience caused to other passengers by the unexpected stop.

“We apologise to customers for the delay. The health and safety of our passengers and crew is always our highest priority,” the Emirates spokesperson said.
