Zumutor Biologics Raises $7.3 Million to Advance Clinical Trials of Novel Cancer Therapy

Biotechnology startup Zumutor Biologics has secured $7.3 million (approximately ₹70 crore) in a Series B funding round to advance the clinical development of its lead cancer therapy candidate, ZM008. The funding round saw participation from existing investors Accel and Bharat Innovation Fund, along with new investors Premji Invest and angel investors including Ashish Kacholia and Raj Dandu.

The fresh capital will support the completion of the company’s ongoing Phase 1 clinical trial of ZM008 under the supervision of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The therapy is being evaluated both as a standalone treatment and in combination with other therapeutic regimens. Zumutor also plans to initiate Phase 1B expansion cohorts and launch global Phase 2 studies, including trials in India.

Targeting Cancer Through Innate Immunity

Founded in 2013 by Kavitha Iyer Rodrigues, Zumutor Biologics focuses on developing immunotherapy treatments that harness the body’s natural immune system to fight cancer. The company’s research is centered on activating natural killer (NK) cells, a critical component of the innate immune response that can identify and destroy cancer cells.

Its lead drug candidate, ZM008, has been designed as a first-in-class NK cell checkpoint therapy. The treatment aims to unlock the potential of innate immunity and improve the body’s ability to attack tumors. The company began human clinical trials of ZM008 in 2024 as part of its efforts to establish the therapy’s safety and effectiveness.

Early Clinical Findings Support Expansion Plans

According to the company, initial data emerging from the ongoing Phase 1 study has demonstrated encouraging signs regarding the therapeutic potential of the NK checkpoint approach in treating solid tumors.

Commenting on the progress of the clinical program, Zumutor’s Chief Scientific Officer, Maloy Ghosh, said that early findings have highlighted the differentiated potential of the therapy. Based on these results, the company is moving forward with dose expansion cohorts and combination studies across multiple tumor types.

The next stages of development are expected to provide additional insights into how ZM008 performs across broader patient populations and treatment settings.

Building a Platform for Next-Generation Immunotherapies

Beyond ZM008, Zumutor has developed two proprietary antibody engineering platforms that are designed to create novel immunotherapies targeting innate immunity pathways and regulating the tumor microenvironment. These platforms form the foundation of the company’s broader strategy to develop innovative cancer treatments that address unmet medical needs.

The startup operates from its headquarters in the United States while maintaining a research and development laboratory in Bengaluru. Over the years, it has focused on building scientific capabilities in antibody engineering and immune modulation.

Before the latest funding round, Zumutor raised $6.2 million in its Series A4 round in 2021, led by Siana Capital.

Growing Momentum in India’s Biotechnology Sector

Zumutor’s fundraising comes at a time when India’s biotechnology ecosystem is receiving increased policy support and investor attention. In the Union Budget this year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Biopharma SHAKTI scheme with an outlay of ₹10,000 crore to strengthen the country’s biopharmaceutical capabilities.

The government has also introduced measures such as a single-window clearance mechanism for biological research and funding support initiatives, including the BIRAC SEED scheme, to encourage innovation among biotechnology startups.

The sector has witnessed growing investor interest as companies work on advanced therapies, biologics, and biotechnology-driven healthcare solutions. Recent investments in the space include funding secured by StrainX Bioworks to expand its fermentation manufacturing capacity and capital raised by Cellogen Therapeutics to advance its CAR-T clinical programs and broaden its gene therapy pipeline.

With its latest funding round, Zumutor Biologics is positioning itself to move its lead cancer therapy into the next stages of clinical development, bringing it closer to potential future treatment applications for patients with cancer.
