New York-based fintech startup Fin.com has raised $20 million in seed funding, marking a significant financing round for the company as it steps out of stealth mode.

Fin.com was founded by Nabeel Alamgir and Mustafa Dar. The seed round closed in August and was led by Expa and Uber co-founder Garrett Camp. Other participants included Coinbase Ventures and Tenet Fund, alongside the founders of Figure, Mesh founder Bam Azizi, Second Sight Ventures, and royal and sovereign wealth offices in the Gulf and Africa.

The funding announcement comes with another notable detail about the young company. Alamgir said Fin.com completed seven acquisitions over the past 12 months, suggesting that the startup has been building out its operation well before becoming widely visible. He also said people may already have encountered Fin.com’s services without knowing the company behind them.

Fin.com is tackling the mechanics of moving money across borders

At the centre of Fin.com’s business is payment technology designed to make international money movement easier for businesses.

Its tools are being used by financial companies, consumer platforms and prediction markets to transfer funds internationally. The technology also enables users to add funds to wallets from cryptocurrency exchanges. Fin.com’s work sits alongside the growing use of stablecoins in cross-border payments.

The company says its technology has a combined reach of more than 800 million users. That figure is a company claim, and Fin.com has not publicly identified the specific clients behind that reach. It has also not disclosed its valuation.

That combination makes the $20 million seed round one of the clearest public glimpses yet into a business that has largely been operating outside the spotlight.

Personal experience helped shape the founders’ focus

The company’s cross-border focus is closely connected to the backgrounds of its two founders.

Alamgir was born in Bangladesh, grew up in Kuwait and later moved to New York as a teenager. Dar was born in Pakistan, spent part of his childhood in Saudi Arabia and subsequently moved to Los Angeles. Both founders have spoken about seeing their parents struggle with sending money to relatives overseas, an experience they said influenced their decision to build Fin.com.

Their entrepreneurship journey also dates back before Fin.com. Dar founded 24/7 Jet, a private aviation firm, in 2012 and exited the business in 2023, whereas Alamgir founded Lunchbox, a restaurant technology company.

South Asia, Africa and the Middle East are key areas of focus

Fin.com is concentrating on South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, regions with which its founders have personal familiarity.

While the company is headquartered in New York, its footprint already extends well beyond the US. Fin.com has offices in Las Vegas, Dubai, Bangalore, Lahore and Dhaka, giving the startup a presence across several of the markets and regions it is targeting.

For Alamgir, the company’s presence in Dhaka also gives Fin.com a direct connection to Bangladesh, the country where he was born.

The funding round, international office network and string of acquisitions offer a clearer picture of how Fin.com has been building while in stealth. What remains undisclosed is equally notable. The company has not named the customers responsible for its claimed reach of more than 800 million users, and it has not revealed the valuation attached to the $20 million financing.

For now, Fin.com’s public story is centred on a straightforward ambition: building infrastructure that helps businesses and financial platforms move money across borders, backed by founders whose own experiences with international money transfers helped shape the idea.
