NOIDA, India: The first day of iPhone 18 Pro sales in India brought long queues, early-morning arrivals and some unusually personal reasons for upgrading, including one Delhi buyer who said he sold gold to purchase Apple’s latest flagship phone for his wife.
The iPhone 18 Pro series went on sale in India on September 18, with buyers gathering outside the Apple Store at DLF Mall of India in Noida before its 8 am opening. Among those at the front of the queue was a Delhi man who said he had come specifically to buy an iPhone 18 Pro for his wife.
His wife was not previously an iPhone user, he said, and had asked for the new phone in Burgundy. Explaining why he was willing to wait for the latest model rather than choose an older device, the buyer spoke less about specifications and more about being able to afford something he wanted to give his wife.
He said that while he had not had the money earlier, he could afford the purchase now and did not know what his financial position might be in the future.
Then came the detail that made his launch-day purchase stand out.

Buyers arrive hours before the Apple Store opens
The Delhi buyer was far from alone in making an early start.
Crowds had formed outside the Noida store before opening, and queues continued even after customers began entering. Photographs from the store showed buyers waiting both outside the mall entrance and inside the Apple retail space as sales got underway.
The launch also drew customers from outside the Delhi-NCR region.
Gurdita Singh travelled from Punjab with a friend and had been waiting since 6 am. According to his friend, Singh was preparing to get married and wanted to buy an iPhone 18 Pro for his fiancee.
His shopping trip did not end there. Singh said he was also buying an iPhone 18 Pro Max for himself. Together, the two phones cost him more than Rs 3.5 lakh, he said. After completing the purchases, he planned to return to Punjab, with a train scheduled for 11 am.
The episode highlighted how, for several people interviewed at the store, launch day was tied not simply to replacing an old phone but to gifts, relationships and the experience of buying a new iPhone as soon as it became available.
Couple buys two iPhone 18 Pro phones
Another couple at the store had come to collect two iPhone 18 Pro units.
Asked about the higher price of the new model compared with the previous year, the woman acknowledged the increase but said people who wanted an iPhone would still be prepared to pay for it. The couple had prebooked their phones on September 12.
They were already thinking about another Apple purchase. The couple said they intended to buy the iPhone Duo through a friend travelling from Hong Kong, who was expected to bring the device back in October.
Elsewhere in the queue, Vishal, a buyer from Haryana, was also asked about rising prices. He said he would manage even if prices continued to increase.
Students, employees and businesspeople join the queue
The people waiting for the iPhone 18 Pro came from a range of backgrounds, including students, employees and businesspeople. Some had taken leave from work so they could buy the phone on the first day of sales.
But arriving at the store did not guarantee a purchase.
Some people who had not preordered the iPhone 18 Pro were unable to buy one that day and were not permitted to enter for a purchase. One person interviewed outside the store said he had not known that a preorder was required.
The scenes in Noida offered a close look at the human side of a major smartphone launch in India. The morning was marked by customers travelling across state lines, couples buying devices together, people waiting for hours and, in one striking case, a buyer saying he had converted gold into cash so he could surprise his wife with the newest iPhone.
The launch-day queues may have centred on a technology product, but many of the stories outside the store were ultimately about something more familiar: gifting, aspiration, timing and the willingness of buyers to make significant financial choices for a device they had decided they wanted on day one.
