Starting April 15, Terminal 2 (T2) of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport will be shut for urgent repairs, prompting a complete shift of operations to Terminal 1 (T1). The closure is expected to last for approximately four months.
Airlines operating from T2, including IndiGo and Akasa, have confirmed the move. IndiGo stated that all flights previously departing from or arriving at T2 will now operate from T1. Akasa also confirmed the terminal shift to T1D.
IndiGo assured passengers that proactive steps are being taken to ensure a smooth transition. Passengers are being informed via SMS, emails, and calls. Travelers are advised to check their terminal and flight status on the airline’s website or app before heading to the airport.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has begun trials to streamline baggage transfers between Terminal 3 (international) and Terminal 1 (domestic), as T3-T1 connectivity remains a challenge with no air train available yet. DIAL aims to reduce passenger inconvenience, especially for international flyers with domestic connections.
“We’re testing a system where passengers arriving from T3 and flying domestically from T1 can drop their baggage at T3, and it will be transferred airside,” said DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar. This move hopes to ease transfer pains, especially as Air India and IndiGo expand routes, increasing connecting traffic.
DIAL has committed to the Civil Aviation Ministry that connecting passengers between T1 and T3 can be transferred within 120 minutes despite the 7-km gap between the terminals.
As T1 prepares to run at full capacity, airport authorities urge travelers to plan ahead and stay updated on flight and terminal changes.
