Pharmacy-focused quick commerce startup Rio Health has raised $4.5 million, or about Rs 43 crore, in a pre-Series A funding round led by Version One Ventures, giving the company fresh capital to expand its medicine delivery network across Delhi NCR.

Existing investors Xeed Ventures, Good Capital and Amplify also participated in the all-equity round. The fundraise takes Rio Health’s total capital raised so far to Rs 62.2 crore, or approximately $6.5 million.

The company plans to use the money to add 12 dark stores across Delhi NCR while investing further in the technology that supports ordering, inventory management and delivery operations. Rio Health is also aiming to cross Rs 150 crore in annual recurring revenue over the next nine to 12 months.

Founded by Ankur Agrawal and Amit Ahuja, Rio Health is built around a fast-delivery model for medicines and healthcare essentials. The startup currently delivers across Delhi NCR in about 20 to 30 minutes. Customers can place orders by typing or speaking in Hindi, English or Hinglish, while prescriptions can also be submitted as photographs.

That prescription-led ordering flow is supported by an artificial intelligence system that identifies medicines listed on the prescription and prepares an order. The order is then checked by a licensed pharmacist before it moves ahead for fulfilment.

Rio Health is currently processing more than 30,000 orders every month, with an average order value of between Rs 600 and Rs 700. The company says close to 80 per cent of its orders come from repeat customers, a figure that points to the importance of recurring demand in a category where medicine purchases can extend well beyond one-off convenience orders.

Its catalogue includes more than 20,000 stock-keeping units. Medicines outside the routinely stocked range are sourced through the company’s distributor network. Each dark store operates within a radius of roughly three kilometres, while neighbourhood-level demand data is used to estimate medicine requirements and plan inventory.

The expansion comes at a time when medicine delivery is becoming a more closely watched part of India’s quick commerce market. Unlike grocery delivery, however, pharmacy fulfilment brings additional requirements around licensing, prescription verification, inventory controls, storage and fulfilment.

Larger quick commerce platforms including Zepto, Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart are also exploring faster medicine delivery as they move beyond grocery into higher-value categories. At the same time, specialist healthcare delivery companies are trying to build models designed specifically around pharmacy operations and regulation.

For Rio Health, the next phase will centre on whether a denser dark-store network, paired with prescription processing and localised inventory planning, can support its push towards more than Rs 150 crore in annual recurring revenue.
