Startup hiring is back on campus after a two-year lull, bringing a fresh wave of optimism to placement seasons across India. Early data from leading engineering and management institutes shows a 20-30% jump in startup recruiters this year, signalling renewed confidence among new-age firms across Q-commerce, e-commerce, and consumer tech sectors.

Financial Express reports that the sharpest rebounds are being seen in quick commerce, food delivery, consumer tech and e-commerce, where companies are expanding operations and building fresher pipelines.

“Startups are back, but they’re hiring smarter. The focus is on critical roles that drive profitability, not just scale,” said a placement officer at a leading IIT, summing up the changed mood on campuses.

Hiring Revival After a Lull

The return of startups to campuses marks a turning point after two muted hiring seasons when most new-age firms froze recruitment amid a funding crunch. Placement teams say this year’s uptick, though modest compared to the boom years, reflects stabilisation in India’s startup job market. Companies are again scouting for young engineers, data professionals and operations managers, roles that had largely vanished from campus catalogues since 2022.

For students, the increased recruiter count translates into more interview slots and a wider profile range. For startups, it offers a cost-efficient way to onboard fresh talent as they seek growth without inflating payrolls.

Q-Commerce and Consumer Tech Drive the Wave

Much of the surge is coming from startups in Q-commerce, food delivery and consumer technology, sectors that have regained momentum after achieving better unit economics. Food delivery giants are recruiting for tech and analytics functions as they expand into smaller cities.

Q-commerce companies, dependent on dense last-mile logistics, are hiring operations and supply-chain specialists to sustain their growth pace.

Recruitment experts say this sector-led comeback underscores a strategic shift, companies are hiring selectively but consistently in areas that promise stable demand.

Startup Hiring: Beyond the IITs

Incidentally, the revival is not restricted to the IITs and top-tier campuses. Driven by cost considerations and also due to the imperative of diversity, startups are now spreading their nets across Tier-2 and Tier-3 engineering and management colleges. Participation from digital-first firms is strong on smaller campuses, much better than at any point since the pandemic.

This broadening trend reflects a more balanced hiring geography, where metro-centric recruitment is giving way to nationwide outreach. Startups say non-metro graduates often show higher retention and adaptability, crucial for companies streamlining operations.

A Measured Return, But With Optimism

While the 20–30% rise in startup hiring is a welcome boost, placement officials caution that it remains a recovery phase, not a boom. Offers are more deliberate, compensation bands stable, and recruiters more selective about skill sets.

Even so, the presence of so many young firms on campus again has revived optimism among students. For the Class of 2026, the message is clear, India’s startup ecosystem may be leaner than before, but it is hiring again, with intent and purpose.
