Jeff Bezos’ industrial AI startup Prometheus has raised $12 billion in a Series B funding round, valuing the company at about $41 billion and placing it among the most closely watched names in the emerging physical AI space.
The company, co-led by Bezos and Stanford scientist Vik Bajaj, announced the round on June 11, 2026. The two executives also appeared together publicly for the first time in a CNBC interview from Prometheus’ San Francisco headquarters.
The funding round includes participation from Bezos along with JPMorgan, BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, DST Global, and Arch Venture Partners. Prometheus had earlier launched with $6.2 billion in initial financing late last year, taking its total funding to more than $18 billion in roughly seven months.
At the centre of Prometheus’ pitch is what Bezos has described as an “artificial general engineer.” Unlike mainstream AI chatbots that generate text, Prometheus is focused on using AI to help design and manufacture complex physical products. The company’s target areas include jet engines, chips, bridges, and drug compounds.
That ambition explains the size of the funding round. Bezos has said Prometheus is a capital-intensive company because it needs both large-scale compute and specialized training data. He also said it is too early to think about an eventual IPO.
Prometheus currently employs about 150 people, with teams in San Francisco, London, and Zurich. The company has recruited talent from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Nvidia, though its leaders have not shared a clear product launch timeline. They have only indicated that early rollouts are expected.
Bajaj has described engineering problems such as jet engine design as highly complex, often requiring years of work from large teams. His view is that recent progress in AI has made it possible to treat the full process, from design to manufacturing, as an end-to-end AI challenge.
That is a different problem from training a chatbot. Physical AI depends on data tied to materials, simulations, stress tests, fluid dynamics, manufacturing limits, and real-world performance. The difficulty is not only in generating designs but in making sure they can actually be built and work safely in the real world.
For investors, the attraction is speed. If Prometheus can use AI to run large numbers of simulated design cycles and narrow down workable ideas faster than traditional engineering teams, the company could shorten the time needed to develop complex products.
Bezos has also suggested that Prometheus may buy parts of companies that could benefit from its technology and help improve their manufacturing processes. That would make the startup not just a software builder, but a potential operator inside real industrial businesses.
The company has no corporate ties to Amazon or Blue Origin. Bezos remains Amazon’s executive chairman and largest individual shareholder, while Blue Origin continues as a separate space company. Prometheus is being built as its own venture, with Bezos saying it needs a dedicated team focused on one mission.
Bezos also pushed back against concerns that AI-led engineering could remove jobs. He argued that higher productivity could raise living standards and create what he called “labor scarcity,” where demand for workers remains strong. His comments come at a time when automation remains a sensitive topic across the technology industry.
Prometheus is still at an early stage, and many questions remain unanswered. The company has raised enormous capital, attracted elite investors, and hired from some of the world’s leading AI labs. What it has not yet shown publicly is whether its artificial general engineer can deliver at industrial scale.
For now, Prometheus represents one of the biggest bets yet that AI’s next frontier will not be limited to screens, search boxes, or chat windows. Bezos and Bajaj are placing their wager on machines, materials, factories, and the long, expensive process of turning ideas into real-world products.
