The final week of September delivered a packed run of smartphone launches, led by new flagship processors from Qualcomm and major announcements from Xiaomi (Xiaomi 18 Pro and Pro Max), vivo, Motorola and others. What stood out was not simply the number of devices unveiled, but how quickly phone makers moved to pair new silicon with larger batteries, ambitious camera systems and more experimental hardware features.
Qualcomm opened the week with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, both manufactured on TSMC’s 2nm process. The new platforms bring upgraded Oryon CPU cores, Adreno GPUs and improved AI capabilities, with the Extreme variant positioned as the more powerful of the two.
Xiaomi followed with the Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, two phones that push the company’s flagship formula in a noticeably different direction.
The Xiaomi 18 Pro features a 6.4-inch OLED display, while the 18 Pro Max moves up to a 6.9-inch panel. Both include hardware-level privacy protection, but the more unusual addition sits on the back. Xiaomi has fitted secondary rear displays measuring 2.7 inches on the Pro and 2.9 inches on the Pro Max.
Battery capacity is another major differentiator. The Xiaomi 18 Pro packs a 7,000mAh battery and runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. The 18 Pro Max gets a much larger 8,500mAh battery along with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
Both models also feature dual 200MP Leica cameras, giving Xiaomi’s new Pro lineup an unusually aggressive mix of camera hardware, battery capacity and rear-screen functionality.
In China, the Xiaomi 18 Pro starts at CNY 5,999, while the Pro Max begins at CNY 6,999. Both phones are already on sale in the country, with a global launch for the Xiaomi 18 Pro series planned for later in the year.
vivo brings three models to the X500 series
vivo also used the week to introduce its X500 family, comprising the X500, X500 Pro and X500 Pro Max.
The X500 and X500 Pro are powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600, while the X500 Pro Max steps up to the Dimensity 9600+ and carries the strongest camera setup of the three models.
Across the range, vivo is offering large batteries, Zeiss-branded cameras and OriginOS 7. Sales in China are scheduled to begin on September 30, with global availability marked for October 27.
One of the Pro Max model’s more distinctive camera features is a 4K 240fps cinematic slow-motion video mode.
Motorola quickly adopts Qualcomm’s top-tier chip
Motorola was another brand to move quickly after Qualcomm’s chipset announcement.
The company introduced the Signature 27 with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Motorola did not disclose every detail of the device, but confirmed a 200MP zoom camera, a high-end OLED display and a large battery. The phone also features a 50MP main rear camera.
The timing is significant because it places Motorola among the first manufacturers publicly tying a new flagship device to Qualcomm’s latest high-end platform.
OnePlus 16 design breaks cover
OnePlus, meanwhile, revealed the design of the OnePlus 16 ahead of its full launch.
The phone features a redesigned camera island and will be offered in three finishes named Dark Forest, Mars Masterprice and Tomorrow Starlight, corresponding broadly to black, light orange and grey.
The announcement focused on appearance rather than a complete specification sheet, leaving the full hardware picture for the formal launch.
Realme gives the Harry Potter edition a colour-changing trick
Realme also introduced a themed version of the 16 Pro built around the Harry Potter franchise.
Its most distinctive feature is what the company describes as Quadra Light-Sensing Color-Changing technology. The Hogwarts crest on the back can take on the colours associated with the four Hogwarts houses. The special edition also includes Harry Potter-themed interface elements, packaging and accessories.

Meta removes the cameras from one pair of smart glasses
The week was not limited to smartphones.
Meta unveiled two new smart-glasses products, including a VR-focused model and the Ray-Ban Meta Audio. Unlike the company’s camera-equipped smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta Audio removes cameras entirely and concentrates on audio, calls and Meta AI.
That makes the product notably different from Meta’s existing approach to wearable eyewear, with the company positioning the model around a more discreet, audio-first experience.
Samsung Galaxy S27 memory details surface
Elsewhere, reported memory configurations for Samsung’s Galaxy S27 lineup emerged during the week.
The Galaxy S27 and S27+ are tipped to start with 12GB of RAM, while the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra could offer up to 16GB. Storage on the Ultra is reported to reach as high as 1TB. These specifications remain leaked information rather than officially announced details.
vivo V80 set for an October 6 India launch
vivo also revealed key details of the upcoming V80.
The phone is set to feature a 6.59-inch 1.5K 144Hz OLED display, a 7,200mAh battery with 90W charging and a Zeiss-backed camera system capable of 4K video recording at 60fps.
It will be offered in Sunrise Anthem, Horizon Blue and Stellar Black. The vivo V80 is scheduled to launch in India on October 6, when pricing will also be announced. It is also set to become the first vivo phone outside China to ship with OriginOS 7.
A week defined by bigger batteries and faster flagship adoption
Taken together, the announcements show how quickly the latest generation of flagship components is moving into commercial devices.
Xiaomi has paired Qualcomm’s newest processors with unusually large batteries and secondary rear displays. vivo is spreading its X500 family across two MediaTek chipsets while pushing camera and video features higher up the range. Motorola has already attached Qualcomm’s most powerful new chip to its Signature 27, while other brands are experimenting with design, themed hardware and new wearable formats.
