Olee.space, an innovative startup in photonics and defense-technology, has closed USD 3 million in seed funding. The round was led by Rockstud Capital with a group of international investors participating.

Olee.space is an IIT Bombay alumnus James Solomon and engineer Suman Hiremath who are making efforts to advance important technologies involving laser-based communication and directed-energy defense systems.

Strategic Investment to Strengthen National Capabilities

This fresh infusion of capital will be directed towards:

  • Scaling production of Olee.space’s next-generation photonics systems
  • Advancing quantum-secure communication protocols
  • Expanding development of Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) technologies
  • Supporting India’s efforts to build homegrown, sovereign strategic infrastructure

Rockstud Capital, investing from its ₹300 crore second fund, focuses on companies operating in national security, Industry 4.0, and cutting-edge technology sectors.

Technology Spotlight: FSOC & DEW Innovations

Free-Space Optical Communication (FSOC):

Olee.space provides FSOC solutions relying on low-powered infrared laser beams for ultra-fast, highly-secure data links across terrestrial, aerial maritime and space platforms. These systems are designed for high bandwidth, low latency, and near immunity to interception, valuable in defence and aerospace applications.

Directed Energy Weapons (DEW):

The startup is also working on DEW platforms, that can neutralize drones, UAVs, and satellites using precise tracking and real-time targeting. These systems are uncommon worldwide and could provide a massive improvement in India’s autonomous defense.

Behind the Vision: Founding Team Speaks

James Solomon, Founder and CEO, shared his motivation for building Olee.space:

“I have always been fascinated by how lasers function. Working with light gives me happiness… What we do here is rewarding to the country, and we will continue doing so.”

Co-founder and COO Suman Hiremath emphasized the broader mission:

“This funding validates our belief that India can lead in photonics and laser-based technologies, with a focus on national security and strategic infrastructure.”

Supporting Comments from Rockstud Capital

Abhishek Agarwal, Managing Partner at Rockstud Capital, expressed strong confidence in the company’s vision:

“Olee.space is building a future where secure communication thrives and high-speed data empowers organizations and individuals. James’s vision of a self-healing, ultra-high-bandwidth satellite mesh network is inspiring, and we’re proud to support it.”

This investment aligns with Rockstud’s broader strategy of backing transformative technologies with national and global impact.

Olee.space’s R&D Journey & Broader Implications

Olee.space has had more than five years of research and development experience, and has completed several field level deployments of its technologies. While we cannot evaluate the specific technical results, startup’s portfolio illustrated significant commitment to advancing India’s position in quantum-safe communication and directed-energy defense.

There’s enthusiasm for FSOC and DEW technologies stemming from their potential use in secure and high-speed data transfers, specifically in strategic defense and aerospace. Olee.space has developed a solution that could be an important tool in national defense given the increasing use of drone warfare, drone surveillance, and the interception of data throughrapid and evolving geopolitical development.

Final Thought: A Helping Hand for India’s Technological Sovereignty

The USD 3 million seed round raised by Olee.space is more than just an investment; it is a push for the country of India to establish itself as a significant player in photonics and quantum communication technologies. The startup is not building innovative systems but is also helping to secure India’s strategic goal towards technological self-reliance related to critical defence information technology infrastructure. As production scales, encryption protocols are strengthening and next-generation DEW platforms are being created, Olee.space is now positioning itself to be a leader in deep tech innovation. Its success could have long-term effects on the future of secure communication and aerial defence communication, in India, and available to other countries.
