Laundry and home-cleaning brand Ecosys has raised Rs 5 crore in a pre-Series A funding round, taking its total capital raised so far to Rs 7.94 crore. Proteus Partners participated in the round, alongside other investors.

The latest fundraise gives Ecosys additional capital to build its brand and reach more consumers through digital channels. The company also plans to broaden its formats across the laundry and home-cleaning categories, according to details shared with the funding announcement.

For Ecosys, the round comes as the company continues to build its proposition around compact cleaning formats rather than conventional ready-to-use products packed in fresh plastic containers.

Founded in 2017 by Sumit Goyal and Chirag Dangi, Ecosys develops eco-friendly cleaning products, including soluble laundry and cleaning pods. Its pods use 10-ml PVA, or polyvinyl alcohol, packaging that dissolves in water, with the format intended to help reduce single-use plastic waste.

That packaging approach is one of the more distinctive elements of the company’s product strategy. Instead of requiring consumers to purchase a new bottle with every cleaning product, Ecosys’ formats are designed to allow existing bottles to be reused.

Ecosys expands beyond laundry pods

While laundry pods are a visible part of the Ecosys portfolio, the company’s range extends across several household-cleaning requirements.

Its products include laundry detergent pods, glass cleaners, bathroom cleaners, and kitchen and utensil sprays. The products are also designed with households with children and pets in mind, while the reusable-bottle model is intended to reduce the need for new plastic containers with each purchase.

The Rs 5 crore round therefore arrives at a point when Ecosys is not simply trying to sell another detergent product. Its broader challenge is to establish water-soluble and reusable-container formats across everyday household cleaning, while convincing more consumers to shift from established liquid, powder and spray formats.

The company has positioned itself around a premium and convenience-led proposition and is selling its products through e-commerce channels. The planned investment in digital consumer reach fits directly with that approach.

Household cleaning attracts fresh attention

Ecosys is also operating in a category where sustainable and lower-waste formats are becoming increasingly visible. The home-cleaning startup segment is seeing products built around laundry pods, plant-based detergents, refill formats and low-waste packaging.

Market research puts the annual growth of India’s household cleaners market at nearly 14%, around twice the global growth rate.

Funding activity elsewhere in the segment also points to investor interest in newer home and personal-care brands. Cleevo secured $1 million, while Beco raised $10 million from Tanglin Venture Partners. Scrubsy raised Rs 27 crore in August this year.

For Ecosys, however, the immediate focus is clear. The company now has another Rs 5 crore to put behind consumer acquisition, brand building and a wider set of laundry and home-cleaning formats.

Its next phase will revolve around whether water-soluble pods and bottle-reuse formats can move beyond being an alternative cleaning proposition and become part of the regular household-cleaning basket for a larger group of consumers.
