Amazon on Thursday announced plans to invest more than ₹3.11 lakh crore (around $35 billion) in India by 2030, underlining the country’s growing importance in the global technology and e-commerce landscape.

The announcement was made at the sixth Amazon Smbhav Summit in New Delhi, where the company outlined a long-term roadmap centred on artificial intelligence, logistics infrastructure, small business enablement and job creation.

AI and infrastructure at the core

Amazon revealed that the suggested investment would be directed at enhancing its AI offerings, bolstering its logistics network, as well as improving digital services for sellers and consumers. This, it revealed, is geared towards ensuring that ecommerce is more accessible and more efficiency is achieved in its India operations.

The investment plan adds to the nearly $40 billion Amazon has already invested in India, according to the company.

Jobs, exports and MSMEs

Amazon said it expects the new investment cycle to help create 1 million jobs, enable cumulative ecommerce exports worth $80 billion, and extend AI-driven benefits to nearly 15 million small businesses over the coming years.

The company identified AI-led digitisation, export growth and employment generation as the three key pillars guiding its India strategy.

Economic impact claims

An economic impact report prepared by Keystone Strategy described Amazon as India’s largest foreign investor, the largest contributor to ecommerce exports, and one of the country’s major job creators.

According to the report, Amazon has helped digitise over 12 million small businesses and enabled $20 billion in cumulative ecommerce exports so far. It also estimated that Amazon supported about 2.8 million direct, indirect, induced and seasonal jobs across sectors in India during 2024.

Leadership View At Amazon

Amit Agarwal, senior vice-president for emerging markets at Amazon, said the company has focused on building both physical and digital infrastructure in India, creating employment opportunities and helping Indian products reach global markets.

He said Amazon aims to widen access to AI tools, create large-scale employment and quadruple ecommerce exports enabled by the platform to $80 billion by 2030.

Consumer tools and education push

Amazon also outlined plans to improve the shopping experience through tools such as Lens AI for visual search, conversational shopping via Rufus, and multilingual features to address literacy barriers.

Separately, the company said it will support 4 million government school students through AI education initiatives, including AI-focused curricula, hands-on learning modules and teacher training programmes.

Amazon’s announcement comes amid a broader surge in big-tech investment commitments in India, highlighting the country’s role as a key growth market for global technology firms.
