Krutrim is a new and fast-growing artificial intelligence (AI) company from India. It was started in 2023 by Bhavish Aggarwal, who is also known for founding Ola Cabs and Ola Electric. Krutrim’s main goal is to make powerful AI tools that work well for Indian people, businesses, and languages.

What Does Krutrim Do?

  • Krutrim builds large language models (LLMs) that can understand and talk in many Indian languages, not just English.
  • It has created India’s first AI assistant, called Kruti, which can book cabs, order food, pay bills, and more, all in your preferred language.
  • The company is also working on making its own AI chips and building cloud infrastructure in India, so that Indian data stays in the country and is used for local benefit.
  • Krutrim’s technology supports text, voice, image, and video, making it useful for many different tasks.

Part of the Ola Group

Krutrim is part of the Ola group, so it can use Ola’s experience in technology and transportation to make its AI even better. The plan is to use Krutrim’s AI in Ola’s electric vehicles and other smart devices in the future.

Krutrim’s Investments: A Simple Explanation

  • In January 2024, Krutrim raised $50 million from investors led by Matrix Partners India. This investment made Krutrim India’s first AI unicorn, meaning the company’s value reached $1 billion.
  • Before this, Krutrim also got $24 million as a loan from Matrix Partners.
  • In total, Krutrim has raised about $74–75 million so far.
  • Krutrim is now talking to investors to raise even more money—about $300 million in a new funding round. The company first aimed to raise $500 million but reduced the target to $300 million because of less interest from investors.
  • Some of the big names helping with this new funding round are Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and SBI Capital Markets.
  • Krutrim plans to use this money to make better AI products, hire more people, and build India’s biggest AI supercomputer.

Krutrim’s Sales: A Simple Overview

Krutrim, the Indian AI startup, has not made any sales revenue yet. In its first year, the company reported zero income from selling its products or services. Instead, Krutrim spent a lot of money, about ₹135 crore, on research and development to build its AI technology and products like the Krutrim Cloud and AI chips.

Krutrim is getting ready to launch its cloud service soon, which is when it expects to start earning money. For now, the company is focused on building its technology and getting ready for future sales, rather than making profits right away.

In short, Krutrim is a bold step for India in the world of artificial intelligence. It is creating AI tools that truly understand India’s languages and culture, and it is helping India become a global leader in this fast-growing field.
