Virat Kohli celebrated his 38th birthday with an impressive match-winning performance against New Zealand, scoring 74 off 51 balls to guide India towards victory in a rain-shortened ODI at Eden Park, Auckland. His innings, featuring 13 boundaries and a six, highlighted his ability to control a chase even under challenging batting conditions.

India were chasing a revised target of 143 after New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs. Kohli anchored the innings alongside Shubman Gill, with the pair putting together a 113-run partnership that brought India within touching distance of the target.

The veteran batter adjusted his approach to the conditions before increasing the scoring rate following rain interruptions. His dismissal came when India were close to securing the win, but his contribution had already put the team in a commanding position.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was particularly impressed by Kohli’s performance, describing it as one of the finest innings he had seen from the batter in recent years.

“I’ve seen him bat for years and years. I think this is as good as he’s ever batted in these conditions,” Shastri said, praising Kohli’s fluency and authority on a challenging pitch.

India’s Young Pace Attack Restricts New Zealand to 185

While Kohli led the chase, India’s inexperienced pace attack played an equally important role in setting up the victory.

With senior fast bowlers unavailable, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj stepped up, sharing nine wickets between them to restrict New Zealand to 185.

Arshdeep finished with figures of 4/70, while Gurnoor Brar picked up three wickets for 44 runs. Anshul Kamboj contributed two wickets for just 22 runs, using accuracy and sustained pressure to restrict the opposition’s scoring opportunities.

Kamboj was particularly effective in building pressure, delivering 46 dot balls. Gurnoor’s ability to extract bounce and Arshdeep’s control with the ball further troubled New Zealand’s batting lineup.

India also produced important moments in the field. Rohit Sharma contributed with a run-out, while Kohli took a diving catch at slip to dismiss Nathan Smith.

The collective bowling and fielding effort ensured that New Zealand never established a substantial total, leaving India with a manageable target despite the weather interruptions.

Kohli’s Record-Breaking ODI Career

Kohli’s latest performance comes amid another significant chapter in his international career. In September 2026, he became the fastest batter to reach 15,000 runs in ODI cricket, adding another major milestone to an already remarkable record.

He also holds the record for the most centuries in men’s ODI cricket, with 55 hundreds. His consistency while chasing targets has been another defining feature of his career, particularly in successful run chases.

Some of his other major achievements include:

  • 2023 ODI World Cup: Scored 765 runs, the highest individual tally in a single edition of the tournament.
  • IPL 2016: Recorded 973 runs in a single season, a record that remains unbeaten.
  • Test captaincy: Led India to 40 Test victories, making him the country’s most successful Test captain.
  • ODI run chases: Holds leading records for runs scored while chasing and in successful chases.

His ability to perform across different conditions and formats has made him one of the most consistent batters of his generation.

2027 World Cup Remains a Major Career Target

Having retired from Test and T20I cricket, Kohli’s international focus is now on the ODI format. The 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup remains an important target as he continues his career in the 50-over game.

Another major milestone associated with his career is Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries. With 55 ODI hundreds already to his name, Kohli continues to add to his tally in the format.

His performance in Auckland offered another reminder of his experience and ability to deliver under pressure. At 38, Kohli remains an important part of India’s ODI plans, with his performances continuing to attract attention as the team builds towards the next World Cup.
