Sarah Abo will leave the Nine Network at the end of 2026, bringing her time as co-host of Today to a close after nearly four years in the breakfast television role.

The 39-year-old presenter, who is currently on maternity leave, confirmed her departure on Wednesday. Nine said Abo will leave the network to pursue other opportunities, while an announcement about the Today line-up for 2027 is expected soon.

Her exit comes during a deeply personal year for the presenter. Abo and her husband, Cyrus Moran, welcomed their son Sonny in July. The following month, Sonny made an appearance in the Today studio when Abo brought him in to meet the team.

That new chapter featured prominently in Abo’s farewell message.

“Becoming a mum has heralded a new chapter and sharing that with our audience has been truly special,” she said.

“As many of you know, this has been a significant journey for my family and will continue to be my greatest achievement.”

Abo thanks Today viewers after years of early mornings

Abo used her departure statement to acknowledge the viewers who had made her part of their morning routine.

“Words can’t express how grateful I am to our viewers for letting me into your homes to be part of your morning routine,” she said.

“Without you, there is no Today show.”

She also reflected on a Nine career that extended well beyond the breakfast program.

Abo joined Nine in 2019 as a reporter for 60 Minutes. She went on to become the permanent co-host of Today in 2023, officially making her debut in the role on January 16 that year.

Looking back at that period, Abo said her work had taken her around the world.

“Together with 60 Minutes, I’ve spent my time at Nine chasing stories, travelling and reporting from all over the world, interviewing some incredible and inspiring people from all walks of life,” she said.

‘I’ll miss you all dearly’

Abo also reserved part of her farewell for the people behind the cameras and those who shared the desk with her.

She thanked the wider Today team, including its crew, producers and fellow hosts, while acknowledging the unusual working hours that come with breakfast television.

“It takes a special kind of crazy to wake up at the hours we do but it’s so much easier when the team feels like family,” Abo said.

“I’ll miss you all dearly.”

Nine executive director of news and current affairs Fiona Dear described Abo as an important part of the program and highlighted the demands of fronting a lengthy live breakfast broadcast.

“Sarah has been an integral part of the Today team, bringing warmth, energy and first-class journalism to the program each morning,” Dear said.

“It takes enormous skill to front 3½ hours of live television every day, and Sarah did it with sharp journalistic instincts. We thank her for everything she brought to Today, and wish Sarah and her family all the very best.”

From 60 Minutes reporter to Today co-host

Abo’s move to the Today desk was announced in late November 2022. She replaced Allison Langdon, who moved to A Current Affair.

Her January 2023 debut then began a new phase of a Nine career that had started four years earlier with 60 Minutes.

That combination of reporting and live television was something Abo herself highlighted in her farewell, linking the international assignments of her earlier role with the daily connection she later built with breakfast television viewers.

Her final months at Nine will unfold while she remains on maternity leave following Sonny’s birth in July.

Abo has not announced a specific new position. In a separate Instagram post cited by Nine, she thanked viewers and colleagues again and offered only a brief indication of what may follow: “there is more to come”.

For Today, attention now turns to 2027. Nine has confirmed only that an announcement regarding the program’s next line-up will be made soon.

Abo’s tenure with Nine will formally conclude at the end of the year, closing a run that began with reporting for 60 Minutes in 2019 and ultimately placed her at the centre of the network’s breakfast television offering.
