For iPhone owners planning to upgrade to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the cost of the new device is only one part of the calculation. The exchange value offered for an existing phone can significantly reduce the final amount a buyer needs to pay.

A comparison using the same iPhone 15 256GB highlights how much exchange valuations can vary across major platforms. Based on the quoted values available during the comparison, Amazon offered the highest exchange value at up to ₹33,400. Flipkart offered up to ₹31,500, while Apple’s trade-in process quoted up to ₹25,500.

The gap means Amazon’s quoted value was ₹7,900 higher than Apple’s, while Flipkart’s figure was ₹6,000 above Apple’s valuation.

One iPhone, three different exchange quotes

The comparison focused on an iPhone 15 with 256GB of storage that had been purchased in 2024.

Apple’s Trade In programme offered a value of up to ₹25,500 after an enquiry. The programme allows eligible customers to receive trade-in credit towards a new iPhone, with the final value depending on the device and its condition.

Flipkart’s exchange option showed a valuation of up to ₹31,500 for the same iPhone 15 256GB while checking the purchase of an iPhone 17. The platform’s assessment included questions about the phone’s physical condition, including whether the device was flawless.

Amazon displayed the highest figure among the three platforms, offering up to ₹33,400 for the same model and storage configuration.

Based purely on the quoted exchange values, Amazon ranked first at ₹33,400, followed by Flipkart at ₹31,500 and Apple at ₹25,500.

Why the quoted amount may not be the final value

Although the difference between the platforms is substantial, customers should not assume that the maximum amount shown online will automatically be credited.

Exchange programmes generally require details about the condition of the old device, and the physical phone may be checked before the transaction is completed. The final valuation can therefore depend on whether the handset matches the condition described during the online assessment.

Apple’s trade-in process includes an inspection of the device. The company states that the trade-in value can be revised if the phone’s condition does not match the information provided during the initial assessment.

Flipkart’s exchange process similarly asks customers to provide information about the condition of the device. During the comparison, the platform specifically asked whether the iPhone 15 was flawless.

This makes the condition of the old phone an important part of the exchange calculation. A device described as being in flawless condition must meet the platform’s requirements when it is physically assessed.

The highest exchange value may not mean the cheapest upgrade

Apple’s ₹25,500 valuation is ₹7,900 below Amazon’s quoted ₹33,400. However, the exchange value alone does not determine which platform offers the better overall deal.

The final purchase price can also be affected by the price of the new iPhone, exchange bonuses, bank discounts and other offers available at the time of purchase. Amazon, Flipkart and Apple may have different pricing and promotional structures, which means a lower exchange quote could potentially be offset by a better offer elsewhere.

Apple’s official Trade In programme also provides credit towards eligible new iPhone purchases and is available through its online and in-store channels.

How to calculate the real upgrade cost

For buyers considering an upgrade, comparing only the exchange value can give an incomplete picture. The more useful calculation is the final amount payable after all applicable benefits are considered.

Price of new iPhone − exchange value − exchange bonus − bank discount = final amount payable

This calculation can help buyers determine which option actually reduces their upgrade cost the most.

For someone planning a future upgrade to the iPhone 18, the same approach can be used. The platform offering the highest exchange valuation is not necessarily the one that delivers the lowest final purchase price.

Instead, buyers should compare the complete transaction, including the new phone’s price, the confirmed value of the old device and any eligible discounts or bonuses before deciding where to make the upgrade.
