Xiaomi is taking an unconventional approach to flagship smartphones with the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max, introducing a secondary AMOLED display, interactive AI features and ultra-thin bezels. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, meanwhile, focuses on a slimmer body, built-in S Pen and a more familiar premium design.

The competition between Xiaomi and Samsung is no longer just about cameras, processors or battery capacity. Their latest flagship smartphones show two different ideas of what a premium Android phone should offer.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max brings a 2.9-inch AMOLED display to the back of the device, turning an area traditionally reserved for cameras into an interactive space. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra takes a different route, retaining its established design while introducing refinements such as Privacy Display and a revised camera housing.

Both smartphones offer premium construction, IP68-rated protection and AI-related functionality, but their differences become particularly noticeable in everyday usability, design and personalisation.

Xiaomi 18 Pro Max Introduces a 2.9-Inch Rear AMOLED Display

The biggest visual difference between the two smartphones is Xiaomi’s decision to place a second screen on the rear panel.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max features a 2.9-inch AMOLED rear display with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 4,000 nits. Unlike a conventional notification panel, the secondary screen supports several interactive features.

Users can display personalised AI avatars, access more than 100 app cards and interact with NFC-enabled plush toys that change the content appearing on the display.

Xiaomi has also integrated a voice assistant associated with the rear screen. The assistant supports conversations and can control compatible smart-home devices.

The approach also makes the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max stand out in a market where most flagship devices retain similar front-facing designs.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Prioritises Familiarity and Practical Features

Samsung has chosen not to introduce an additional rear display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Instead, the smartphone builds on the appearance of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, retaining a flat display and an integrated S Pen while introducing subtle design changes.

One noticeable adjustment is the camera housing, which now features a slightly more rounded, pill-shaped design.

Samsung has also replaced the titanium frame with Armor Aluminum. The company claims the new material offers better heat management.

Another addition is Privacy Display, reflecting Samsung’s focus on improving the experience offered by its existing smartphone design rather than introducing an entirely different form factor.

The built-in S Pen remains an important distinction. While Xiaomi is experimenting with interactions through its secondary screen, Samsung continues to offer stylus functionality as part of its flagship experience.

Xiaomi’s 0.99mm Bezels Put Display Design in Focus

Xiaomi has also made changes to the front of the 18 Pro Max.

The smartphone features bezels measuring just 0.99mm, giving the front display a particularly narrow border.

For protection, Xiaomi uses Dragon Crystal Glass 3.0. The device also carries an IP68 rating for resistance to dust and water.

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra similarly offers IP68-rated protection, although its design emphasises a thinner and lighter body rather than an additional display.

At 7.9mm thick and weighing 214 grams, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is both thinner and lighter than the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max.

That difference could matter to users who prefer a less bulky smartphone, particularly when carrying or holding a large flagship device for extended periods.

Xiaomi’s additional screen introduces new functionality, while Samsung’s relatively lighter construction presents a different practical advantage.

Samsung Offers a Slimmer Body Despite Xiaomi’s Larger Battery

Battery capacity is another area where the two manufacturers have taken different approaches.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max carries a larger battery than the Galaxy S26 Ultra, while Samsung maintains a slimmer and lighter design.

However, battery size alone does not establish which smartphone will last longer during daily use. Actual endurance depends on factors including software optimisation, display activity and individual usage patterns.

The presence of a secondary AMOLED screen also introduces another element into Xiaomi’s power-management requirements.

Without comparable battery endurance tests, it would be premature to declare either smartphone the winner in battery life.

Xiaomi prioritises battery capacity, while Samsung places greater emphasis on the physical dimensions of its flagship.

Xiaomi and Samsung Take Different Approaches to AI

Artificial intelligence plays a role in both smartphones, but Xiaomi’s implementation is particularly visible through its rear display.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max allows users to personalise the secondary screen with AI avatars and interact with a voice assistant capable of managing compatible smart-home devices.

Its support for more than 100 app cards also gives users several ways to access information and functions through the smaller display.

Samsung continues to develop the Galaxy experience with additional features, including Privacy Display, while retaining the familiar interface and hardware elements associated with its Ultra lineup.

It is less about which phone has more AI capabilities and more about how these technologies are presented to users.

Xiaomi is placing some of its newer interactions on a separate screen, while Samsung is refining the traditional flagship smartphone experience.

Colour Options and Special Editions

Both manufacturers offer several finishes, although Xiaomi has introduced a special edition for users looking for a different appearance.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max is available in Black, White, Iced Peach Pink and Galaxy Blue.

There is also a transparent Special Edition, offered exclusively in a configuration with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

Samsung provides a wider selection of listed colours for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, including Black, White, Sky Blue, Cobalt Violet, Silver Shadow and Pink Gold.

Xiaomi’s transparent edition adds another point of differentiation, while Samsung provides a broader colour selection across its standard lineup.

Which Smartphone Offers the More Interesting Upgrade?

The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra appeal to different expectations of a flagship smartphone.

Xiaomi is introducing features that visibly change the way users can interact with a phone. Its secondary display, AI avatars, smart-home controls and extremely narrow bezels provide a more experimental design.

Samsung, on the other hand, is concentrating on refining features that Galaxy Ultra users already recognise. The integrated S Pen, slimmer build, familiar design and Privacy Display give the Galaxy S26 Ultra a different set of advantages.

Xiaomi’s larger battery is another point in its favour on paper, although the difference in real-world battery life remains unestablished.

There is also a difference in timing. The Galaxy S26 Ultra remains Samsung’s current flagship, with the next major Galaxy S-series refresh expected in 2027, while Xiaomi is bringing newer hardware into the flagship conversation.

Ultimately, neither design approach automatically makes one smartphone superior. The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max is the more unconventional option, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra offers a familiar design with practical refinements.

The real question is whether buyers want a smartphone that changes how they interact with their device or one that improves an experience they already know. That difference, rather than an individual specification, is what makes this flagship comparison interesting.
