India’s startup ambitions received a global push this week, with Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal leading a strategic visit to Israel aimed at deepening cooperation in innovation and technology. A delegation of DPIIT-supported Indian startups accompanied the minister, marking one of the most direct engagements India has made with Israel’s top innovation leadership.

A Showcase of Ideas at Jaffa’s Peres Center

In Jaffa, Goyal toured the Peres Center for Peace & Innovation, an institution that showcases Israel’s evolution as a global innovation hub. The exhibition there highlights how creativity, technology and social impact have shaped the country’s economic growth.

The minister’s visit, officials said, offered a first-hand experience of how structured innovation models can accelerate national development. For Indian startups, the Centre’s focus on real-world problem solving reflects the direction Startup India has been trying to reinforce at home.

Indian Startups Head to the Nerve Centre of Israeli Innovation

Alongside the ministerial visit, a group of Indian startups backed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) held a series of meetings with key players in Israel’s startup ecosystem.

According to Sanjiv Singh, Joint Secretary (Startups), the delegation engaged with:

  • Israel’s Minister of Economy & Industry Nir Barkat
  • Senior officials handling innovation and industry policy
  • Industrial leaders involved in deep tech and startup growth
  • Leading innovation institutions and ecosystem facilitators

Meetings were aimed at helping Indian founders understand how Israel’s high-innovation culture functions, from research and funding to commercial adoption.

Closed-Door Roundtable Opens New Avenues

A closed-door roundtable was one of the key highlights of the visit. Indian startups presented their capabilities and explored partnership opportunities with Israeli investors, institutions and technology experts.

The discussion, officials said, centred on collaborative solutions for global markets, strengthening a shift in policy where Indian startups are no longer seen only as domestic problem solvers but potential global product builders.

A Turning Point for ‘Startup India in Israel’

Officials described the engagement as a “significant moment” for Startup India, because it places Indian founders inside a mature innovation environment rather than viewing it from a distance.

“This visit marks a significant moment for Startup India in Israel,” wrote Sanjiv Singh, emphasizing how the partnership opens access to a world-class innovation ecosystem, exposure to an innovation-driven culture, and the chance to co-create solutions for global markets.

Israel’s Significance for Indian Startups

Often called the “Startup Nation,” Israel has one of the highest densities of startups globally. For India, one of the world’s fastest-growing startup ecosystems, the partnership offers:

  • Experience from a country that commercialises research at scale
  • Access to tech-led global markets
  • Collaboration in areas where both countries are investing heavily, including agriculture tech, cyber security, healthcare and smart manufacturing

For policymakers, the visit also serves as a reminder that India’s startup growth needs deeper international collaboration, not just domestic expansion.

Piyush Goyal’s Visit and Future Plans

This visit sets the stage for structured exchanges among startups, co-development programs, and innovation partnerships. Officials say that more follow-up engagements could happen, setting up a path for joint market access and technology co-creation.

As India seeks to position its entrepreneurs on the global innovation map, Israel’s ecosystem may well become one of its most important learning grounds and a launchpad for Indian startup ambitions beyond the domestic market.
