Apple’s next major hardware event is set for September 9, and attention is already turning to what could change with the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The company has confirmed the event date, although the iPhone 18 Pro Max itself remains an expected announcement rather than one Apple has formally detailed. Current reports suggest the new flagship could follow a familiar design while concentrating its biggest improvements on performance, battery life, display efficiency and photography.

That distinction could matter for iPhone 17 Pro Max owners. If the reported specifications make it into the finished device, the argument for upgrading may come less from how different the phone looks and more from how much longer and more efficiently it works.

A 2nm A20 chip could sit at the centre of the upgrade

One of the most significant reported changes is Apple’s next-generation A20 chipset.

The processor is tipped to be manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process, moving on from the 3nm A19 chip used in the current generation. The expected benefits include stronger performance and improved power efficiency.

Reports also suggest Apple could change the way memory is packaged with the processor, bringing it closer to the chip. That approach could potentially help with multitasking and AI-related workloads.

For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, however, raw processing speed may only be part of the story. A more efficient processor could have a direct impact on another area where the new model is expected to make a noticeable jump: battery life.

The 5,500mAh-plus battery could be the upgrade people actually notice

Among the reported specifications, the battery stands out.

Leaks indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could carry a battery with a capacity of more than 5,500mAh, making it larger than the battery in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The A20 processor and an Apple-designed modem might increase efficiency, which may prolong battery life when using applications that require significant processing power like games and video recordings.

If those reports prove accurate, the battery improvement could become one of the more practical reasons to consider moving from an iPhone 17 Pro Max. It is also a more consequential change than a design refresh for users whose priority is getting through longer periods of intensive use.

Dynamic Island may shrink while the display gets brighter

Apple is not expected to abandon the current front-screen approach, but the Dynamic Island could become less visually dominant.

Reports suggest the Face ID components may be rearranged, allowing Apple to reduce the size of the cutout and free up more display area.

The panel itself is also tipped for an upgrade. An improved LTPO display could provide better power efficiency, while higher brightness is expected to improve visibility. The phone is still expected to retain the smooth 120Hz ProMotion experience.

Together, all of this suggests an evolution rather than a revolution. While the screen will remain instantly recognizable as the screen of an iPhone Pro, what surrounds it could change to become less obtrusive and more effective.

Variable aperture could change how the main camera behaves

The camera system is another area where the iPhone 18 Pro Max could change without simply adding more megapixels.

Apple is expected to retain a triple 48-megapixel camera arrangement, according to the report, but the new model could introduce a variable aperture system.

Unlike a fixed aperture, a variable setup would allow the camera to control how much light reaches the sensor. That could improve low-light photography and provide greater control in bright outdoor conditions.

Apple is also expected to make changes to the Camera Control button aimed at making it easier to use in everyday situations.

The significance here is not simply another camera specification. Variable aperture, if implemented as reported, would change the way the camera itself responds to different lighting conditions.

Apple’s C2 modem is also tipped for the Pro Max

Another expected internal change is Apple’s next-generation C2 modem.

The modem is rumoured to replace the unit used in the previous generation and is expected to improve 5G efficiency and power management. Reports also associate it with better satellite connectivity and additional privacy improvements connected with network location data.

Combined with the A20 chip and larger reported battery, the modem could form part of a broader efficiency push across the device.

September 9 will separate the leaks from the final product

For now, most of the detailed iPhone 18 Pro Max specifications remain based on reports, leaks and rumours.

What Apple has confirmed is its September 9 event. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is widely expected to feature there, along with a new foldable iPhone and the next generation of Apple Watch models.

If the reported upgrades are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may represent a year in which Apple focuses less on making the device look dramatically different and more on improving the parts users interact with every day.

A larger battery, a more efficient 2nm processor, a smaller Dynamic Island, variable-aperture camera hardware and a new modem would collectively make that case. Whether they are enough to persuade iPhone 17 Pro Max owners to upgrade will depend on what Apple ultimately confirms on September 9.
