Delhi-based pet nutrition startup Benny’s Bowl has secured $1.4 million in Pre-Series A funding. This round was led by Atomic Capital. The capital will be used for product innovation, expanding distribution channels, and scaling operations across metro and tier-I cities.
This marks the second institutional round for the company, which previously raised $300,000 in 2022 from BookMyShow CEO Ashish Hemrajani and other angel investors.
What Sets Benny’s Bowl Apart?
Founded in August 2021 by Akshay Gupta and Aashna Jain Gupta, Benny’s Bowl manufactures fresh pet food using real ingredients without preservatives. The company uses retort technology (the same method that keeps astronaut food stable) to maintain a two-year shelf life without refrigeration.
Akshay Gupta isn’t new to the pet industry. He founded Pet Fed, India’s largest pet festival, and has invested in Flying Fur, a mobile pet grooming chain that appeared on Shark Tank India. His co-founder Aashna is pursuing certification as a professional pet nutritionist and develops all the company’s recipes with certified experts.
The startup recently launched clinical nutrition products targeting specific health issues like gut problems, allergies, kidney health, and weight management. With the new funding, they’re planning to launch cat food, protein supplements, and meal toppers.
Strong Market Performance
The numbers tell a convincing story. Benny’s Bowl doubled its revenue over the past year, with 85% coming from repeat customers. That retention rate suggests pet owners aren’t just trying the product once, they’re there to stay around.
The company has set an ambitious target of ₹100 crore in annual recurring revenue by the next financial year. To get there, they’re expanding beyond their current stronghold in metros into tier-I and tier-II cities.
Why Investors Are Betting on Pet Nutrition?
Apoorv Gautam from Atomic Capital points to a straightforward opportunity: India’s pet nutrition market is large but underserved. Post-COVID pet adoption created more demand, and pet owners are increasingly willing to pay for quality.
“The team’s ability to move quickly across categories, especially their expansion into cat nutrition, impressed us,” Gautam said. The fund sees Benny’s Bowl positioned to build long-term leadership in the space.
The Indian pet care market is projected to hit $7 billion by FY28. Yet fresh pet food remains a small slice of that pie, with traditional kibble still dominating. Benny’s Bowl is betting that pet parents will shift toward fresher, more transparent options when given the choice.
Akshay Gupta describes the current Indian pet food market as “broken and filled with poor-quality ingredients and little to no transparency.” His pitch is simple: pet owners shouldn’t have to choose between convenience and quality.
The company faces competition from players like Pet Chef, Mom and Paw, and Pawt Belly. However, Benny’s Bowl has raised more total funding than its nine active competitors, giving it more runway to experiment and scale.
The startup’s near-term priorities are practical. Launch the cat food line to tap a new customer segment. Get products into more offline retail outlets. Build partnerships around clinical and functional nutrition. And crucially, educate consumers who still don’t know fresh pet food is an option.
Success will hinge on execution. Can they maintain that 85% repeat rate while scaling quickly? Can they build efficient distribution without burning through capital? Can they educate enough consumers to hit that ₹100 crore target?
The fundamentals look solid. Pet parents are treating their animals more like family members and spending accordingly. The founders know the industry cold. And the product clearly resonates with customers who try it.
Whether Benny’s Bowl can build a category-defining brand or become one of many players in a fragmented market remains to be seen. But with fresh capital and clear momentum, they’ve got a real shot at changing how Indian pet owners feed their dogs and cats.
