Global startup funding rose to an unprecedented level of $189 billion in February, making it the largest ever recorded in a single month in venture capital funding. The rise, however, was driven by a handful of AI Startups, underscoring the extent to which capital is flowing into frontier bets in AI.

According to Crunchbase data, three companies, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Waymo, accounted for roughly 83% of the month’s total funding, underscoring the extraordinary concentration of investor interest in AI-led platforms.

OpenAI alone secured $110 billion, described as the largest round ever raised by a private, venture-backed company. Anthropic followed with a $30 billion raise, the third-largest venture round on record, while autonomous driving company Waymo brought in $16 billion.

Together, those three deals totaled $156 billion, reshaping February’s funding landscape and pushing overall venture investment to historic levels.

A sharp contrast with public markets

The record-breaking private market activity arrived at a time when public markets were anything but steady. Broader market volatility and uncertainty disrupted IPO momentum, with companies such as Liftoff and Clear Street reportedly withdrawing their public listing plans.

Meanwhile, public software stocks faced pressure amid wider market declines. Yet in private markets, particularly around advanced AI systems and infrastructure, investor appetite remained aggressive.

AI Startups: A staggering year-on-year leap

The scale of February’s jump becomes clearer in comparison to the previous year. Venture funding in February was up nearly 780% from the $21.5 billion raised in February 2025, reflecting how dramatically capital deployment shifted in just twelve months.

The data suggests less of a broad-based venture recovery and more of a capital realignment. Investors are not spreading money evenly across sectors. Instead, they are concentrating bets on companies building large-scale AI models, autonomous systems, and related infrastructure.

For founders outside this narrow band, the fundraising climate may still feel selective. But for AI leaders operating at global scale, February proved that capital, when conviction is high, can move in record-breaking volumes.
