The next-generation Toyota Fortuner is expected to bring a more premium cabin, larger digital displays and a redesigned exterior, with its global debut scheduled for December 1.
Toyota’s popular SUV is preparing for a major update, with Toyota South Africa confirming the December 1 launch date in an interview with Car Mag. While the new Fortuner is expected to make its global debut in December 2026, its launch in India is anticipated around mid-2027.
The upcoming model is expected to receive substantial changes to its styling and interior, although Toyota has yet to confirm the complete specifications of the new Fortuner.
2027 Toyota Fortuner: Expected Interior and Features
One of the biggest expected changes is inside the cabin. The next-generation Fortuner is anticipated to feature a more premium interior, potentially following the direction taken by the latest Toyota Hilux.
The SUV could receive a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system alongside a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. If introduced, the two large displays would mark a significant technology upgrade for the Fortuner.
Other anticipated additions include enhanced driver assistance features, electrically powered steering and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. These features could improve the SUV’s everyday usability and bring its technology package closer to newer vehicles in the segment.
However, the final equipment list will become clearer when Toyota officially unveils the vehicle.
New Toyota Fortuner Design: Connected Taillights and a Squared-Off Rear
Recent sightings of a test vehicle have offered a glimpse of the next-generation Fortuner’s exterior. Although the prototype was heavily camouflaged, several design details were visible at the rear.
The SUV appears to feature redesigned LED taillights extending towards either side of the vehicle. A bulge within the taillight assembly has also raised the possibility of a connecting light bar, although this detail remains unconfirmed.
Other visible elements include a subtle roof spoiler, a rear wiper and a shark-fin antenna. The tailgate also appears to have been redesigned, while the partially concealed rear bumper suggests a rugged look consistent with the Fortuner’s established styling.
At the front, the upcoming SUV is expected to feature eyebrow-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs), a large grille, a revised bumper and a split LED headlamp arrangement.
The overall design could adopt a more upright front profile and a squarer rear section, giving the SUV a more modern appearance while retaining its muscular proportions.
2027 Toyota Fortuner Engine Options: Will Diesel Continue?
Despite the expected exterior and interior changes, the new Fortuner could retain the engine options available with the current model.
The existing lineup includes a 2.8-litre diesel engine offered with manual and automatic transmission options, alongside a 2.7-litre petrol engine paired with an automatic gearbox.
Toyota has also revealed the ninth-generation Hilux with several powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell configurations. However, this does not confirm that the upcoming Fortuner will receive the same range of engines.
For now, the next-generation Fortuner is expected to continue with its existing powertrain choices, although Toyota has not officially confirmed the specifications of the new SUV.
Toyota Fortuner India Launch Timeline
The new Fortuner is expected to make its global debut on December 1, 2026, while its Indian launch is anticipated in mid-2027.
The gap between the global unveiling and the expected India launch means buyers may have to wait several months for the updated SUV to reach the domestic market.
Toyota has yet to announce the India launch date, pricing or the final list of features. More details about the SUV’s design, equipment and powertrain are expected to emerge as the global debut approaches.
