Microsoft has officially announced a new Xbox feature that will allow players to claim digital entitlements for supported physical games they already own. The disc-to-digital program is designed to give Xbox users more flexibility in accessing their game libraries while supporting Microsoft’s broader focus on game preservation.
The feature will initially support most disc-based games released for Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Xbox Insiders will be able to begin testing it on August 31, with a wider rollout to Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles planned for the following months.
Physical Discs Gain Digital Benefits
The new system is designed to be straightforward. Players with a supported physical game can insert the disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game. This allows them to claim a digital entitlement for that title.
The digital entitlement is associated with the physical disc rather than simply functioning as a separate purchase. If the disc changes hands, the entitlement can move with it, allowing another player to use the disc with their own Xbox account. The physical disc itself also continues to work as it did before the digital entitlement was claimed.
Microsoft says the program is part of its wider effort to make game libraries more accessible as gaming hardware and distribution methods continue to change. The company has positioned preservation as an important reason for making physical games easier to carry forward across its ecosystem.
Thousands of Games Included at Launch
The program will not cover every physical Xbox game immediately. Microsoft says it is starting with thousands of titles and plans to expand the list over time.
Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games are expected to support the feature, but availability will vary by title. This means players will need to check whether individual games are included before they can claim their digital entitlements.
Microsoft has not announced a complete list of supported games as part of the initial announcement. However, the company has confirmed that the number of eligible titles will grow as the program develops.
Digital Access Extends Beyond the Console
Once a supported physical game has been converted into a digital entitlement, players can access digital features where those features are supported by the game.
This includes Xbox Play Anywhere, which can provide access to compatible games across Xbox consoles and PC. Supported titles can also be played through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The availability of these features depends on the individual game.
Importantly, claiming the digital entitlement does not deactivate or otherwise change the original physical disc. Players can continue using the disc normally, giving them both the physical copy and the benefits associated with the digital entitlement.
A Preservation-Focused Move From Xbox
Microsoft’s announcement comes as the gaming industry continues to move toward digital distribution. The company says the disc-to-digital program is intended to give players greater confidence that games they have purchased can remain accessible as technology and devices evolve.
The move is particularly relevant for players who have built physical libraries across different Xbox generations. Instead of leaving those collections tied entirely to physical media, the new system provides a way for supported games to gain digital access while retaining the original discs.
The feature also arrives shortly after Sony announced plans to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. Microsoft has not announced an equivalent end to physical Xbox game production.
Xbox Continues Expanding Its Cross-Platform Library
The disc-to-digital announcement is part of a wider effort by Microsoft to make Xbox games available across more devices. Microsoft is also working to bring Xbox and Xbox 360 games to PC, further expanding access to older titles.
For physical-game owners, however, the new disc-to-digital feature represents a more immediate change. Beginning with Xbox Insiders on August 31, players will start testing a system that connects eligible physical games with digital access while keeping their original discs functional.
Microsoft plans to add more titles over time, making the program an important new option for players who want greater flexibility in how they access the games they already own.
