The Story of Digital Labour Chowk: Every morning from his office in Patna, Chandrashekhar Mandal watched men gather at the local chowk, tiffins in hand, tools by their side, waiting for work that might never arrive. One morning, the skies opened. As the workers ran for cover, lunchboxes clutched and tools drenched, a day’s wage slipped away with the rain. That image stayed with him, echoing memories of his hometown Darbhangaof chacha and tau waiting not for opportunity, but for luck.

Mandal would eventually quit a banking job, put in ₹40,000 from his savings, and build a solution the way he knew best: a platform. That decision became Digital Labour Chowk (DLC), a virtual marketplace designed to connect daily-wage workers with verified contractors and real jobs. In his words, DLC set out to digitize trust.

“In Bharat, the hardest thing to digitize isn’t payment or identity, it’s trust,” Mandal says.

What Digital Labour Chowk Does?

DLC operates as a virtual chowk for India’s informal workforce, particularly in construction. The model brings offline dynamics online without stripping away dignity or agency:

  • Help kiosks to onboard workers and create profiles
  • Field verification teams to validate worker identities and skills
  • Digital wage tracking for visibility and transparency
  • Ratings for workers and verified profiles for contractors

The platform’s premise is simple: give workers proof of reliability and contractors a vetted talent pool, then let the market do the rest.

The Numbers So Far

Three years into the journey, DLC reports:

  • 1 lakh workers onboarded
  • 5,000 contractors on the platform
  • 40,000+ jobs matched
  • Operations spanning 27 states

That reach is translating to tangible outcomes: a mason in Uttar Pradesh gets steady work for a month; a contractor in Pune trims costs, saving around 15% by cutting out middlemen; and a daily wager now carries a digital reputation that can travel across sites and cities

The Company Behind the Platform

Mandal is the Founder & CEO of Gaudrika Digital Labour Chowk Private Limited. By his account, he brings six years of relevant industry experience across business growth, new business development, and business planning. Under his leadership, DLC has been:

  • A winner of the National Innovation Challenge
  • Selected for the Social Innovation Lab
  • Showcased in Startup India

In January 2024, the team showcased at Huddle Global 2024 at The Leela Raviz, Kovalam, Trivandrum, an event that drew thousands of visitors and startups, along with mentors and investors. The company also states it will support trainees of the PM Vishwakarma scheme in finding jobs via its platform.

Mandal adds that he is currently enrolled in two programs to strengthen his network and know-how: IMMpact (Harvard Business School) and Seed Spark (Stanford University). His stated goal: scale DLC to new markets and generate positive change for millions of workers.

“Digitizing Trust” in the Informal Economy

DLC’s core innovation isn’t a new payment flow or a shiny ID layer, it’s a verified, portable trust graph for a workforce that has historically lacked one. By verifying skills and identities and then recording work histories and ratings, the platform creates continuity for workers who would otherwise start from zero at every new site.

This trust layer benefits contractors too. With validated profiles and tracked wage records, disputes shrink, matching cycles shorten, and projects run with fewer frictions.

A Market Taking Shape

India’s construction ecosystem is vast, fluid, and notoriously offline. In this context, DLC’s “virtual chowk” is a straightforward proposition: make discovery reliable, make payments predictable, make identity portable. The company positions itself not just as a marketplace, but as an on-ramp to dignity, security, and opportunity for the country’s daily-wage workforce.

From that rainy morning in Patna to a footprint across 27 states, DLC’s thesis is holding: when trust is digitized, luck gives way to opportunity.
