Marvel Studios has found its new Storm, and the actor stepping into the role comes to the franchise from a very different stage. Maya Boyd, 23-year-old Broadway actress, has been announced to play the character Storm in the “X-Men” film being produced by Marvel Studios. The announcement was made by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige on Marvel’s panel at D23 held in Anaheim, California.
For audiences who primarily know Marvel through its films, Boyd may be an unfamiliar name. On Broadway, however, she has already been building a career that includes major productions, a university degree in musical theatre and the demanding schedule of performing eight shows a week.
Her move from Broadway to Storm now puts her on course for a film debut expected in May 2028.
Who is Maya Boyd?
Before joining Marvel Studios’ “X-Men,” Boyd was establishing herself as a rising theatre performer.
She studied musical theatre at the University of Michigan, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Her professional career was already moving forward while she was still a student, with Boyd securing a Broadway role before completing her time at the university.
Her Broadway debut came in “Merrily We Roll Along” in 2023. She later left the production and became a replacement in “Juliet,” taking on the title character and performing the role eight times a week.
That schedule offers an unusually revealing detail about the actor Marvel has chosen for Storm. Before preparing to enter one of the world’s biggest film franchises, Boyd was working through one of theatre’s most demanding routines, repeatedly performing a lead role in front of a live audience.
She also appeared in an adaptation of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” alongside Taraji P. Henson, another credit that helped expand her profile before Marvel came calling.
Maya Boyd will play Storm in Marvel Studios’ new X-Men
Boyd’s casting marks the latest screen interpretation of Storm.
The character was previously played by Halle Berry, who portrayed the adult version across four X-Men films released between 2000 and 2014. Alexandra Shipp later played a younger Storm in “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.”
Boyd will now inherit the role as Marvel Studios develops its own version of “X-Men.”
Her casting was announced publicly at D23 on August 14, 2026, where she appeared onstage alongside other members of the newly announced production and Feige. The event in Anaheim served as the formal introduction of Marvel’s new Storm.
For Boyd, it represents a sizeable change in medium. Her career so far has been rooted largely in theatre, where performances are built and repeated in real time. Her Marvel role will take her into feature filmmaking for the first time.
The reaction to Maya Boyd’s Storm casting
Boyd acknowledged the Marvel announcement quickly.
After the casting became public, she updated her Instagram bio and added lightning emojis, an unmistakable nod to the character she is set to play. Her follower count had also climbed to nearly 100,000 accounts following the announcement.
The response gives Boyd a considerably larger public spotlight than the one she occupied before the D23 reveal.
Until now, much of her professional identity has been connected to Broadway. The “X-Men” role changes that equation immediately, introducing her to Marvel audiences while placing her in a part previously associated with two established film actors.
From Broadway performances to a May 2028 film debut
One of the clearest threads in Boyd’s early career is how quickly her professional work developed.
She went from studying musical theatre at the University of Michigan to making her Broadway debut in 2023, taking on a title role that required eight performances each week and appearing alongside Taraji P. Henson. Her next major step is expected to be her first film appearance, with the upcoming Marvel project currently set to arrive in May 2028.
That makes Boyd’s path to Storm particularly notable. Marvel Studios has not simply selected another familiar screen name for the character. It has brought in a young performer whose most substantial experience has been developed on the Broadway stage.
The scale may be changing, but Boyd is arriving at Marvel with experience built around the discipline of live performance.
And after years in which moviegoers associated Storm with Berry and Shipp, Marvel Studios’ “X-Men” will introduce a third actor to a new generation of audiences.
This time, Storm is coming from Broadway.
