Apple’s next-generation iPhone Pro lineup is beginning to take shape, at least through the growing collection of leaks and rumours surrounding the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The two devices are expected to retain much of the design language of the iPhone 17 Pro series, but the changes being discussed go well beyond a routine internal upgrade. Rumoured improvements stretch across the display, cameras, connectivity, battery, chip architecture and even the physical design of the Pro Max.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in the first half of September, with their release reportedly planned for the second half of the month. A foldable device referred to as the “iPhone Ultra” is also expected alongside them.
Nothing on the following list should be treated as confirmed until Apple makes its announcements. For now, these are the 12 major features and changes being tipped for the iPhone 18 Pro models.
1. A smaller Dynamic Island
One of the most immediately visible changes could arrive at the top of the display.
The iPhone 18 Pro models are rumoured to move the Face ID flood illuminator underneath the screen. Doing so could allow Apple to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island rather than eliminating it entirely.
For users, that would mean more uninterrupted display area while Apple continues to retain the Dynamic Island interface introduced on earlier iPhones.
2. LTPO+ displays could improve battery efficiency
Apple is not expected to dramatically alter the screen sizes this generation. The iPhone 18 Pro is tipped to continue with a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to retain a 6.9-inch panel.
The bigger change could lie underneath.
Both phones are reportedly set to use LTPO+ display technology. The technology is expected to help improve power efficiency, potentially contributing to longer battery life without requiring Apple to rethink the overall display dimensions.
3. Variable aperture could give the camera more flexibility
The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera is another area where Apple could introduce a notable hardware change.
Both iPhone 18 Pro models are rumoured to feature a variable aperture system. Instead of relying on a fixed aperture, the camera could control how much light passes through the lens before reaching the sensor.
That could give photographers greater control over light and depth of field. There is an important caveat, however. Given the relatively small sensors used in smartphones, the extent of the real-world improvement remains unclear.
4. The A20 Pro chip could make the move to 2nm
At the centre of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to be Apple’s A20 Pro chip.
The processor is reportedly being manufactured using TSMC’s first-generation 2nm process, compared with the 3nm architecture used for the A19 Pro.
The combination of the smaller process and a new packaging design is expected to deliver year-over-year gains in performance as well as power efficiency.
For the iPhone 18 Pro generation, efficiency could prove just as important as outright speed, particularly with several other features also expected to place greater demands on connectivity and processing.
5. Apple’s C2 modem is expected to arrive
Apple’s push to develop more of the iPhone’s core silicon in-house is also expected to continue.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are tipped to feature the company’s next-generation C2 cellular modem.
Apple previously introduced its C1 modem in the iPhone 16e, followed by the C1X in the iPhone Air. The C2 would represent the third generation of that modem family, although the precise improvements expected from the new chip have not yet been detailed.
6. 5G connectivity via satellite
The C2 modem could enable one of the most interesting upgrades on the entire list.
The iPhone 18 Pro models are reportedly being prepared to support 5G through satellite connectivity, including web browsing when conventional Wi-Fi or cellular service is unavailable.
If the feature arrives as described, it would significantly expand what an iPhone can do when users are outside normal network coverage.
The exact implementation, availability and network conditions have not been detailed in the information currently available.
7. A new N2 wireless chip
Another Apple-designed component expected inside the iPhone 18 Pro is the N2 chip.
Its predecessor, the N1, supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, while also helping improve features such as Personal Hotspot and AirDrop.
The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to move to the next-generation N2. What Apple will actually improve with the new chip remains unknown for now.
8. Dark Cherry could become the headline colour
Hardware specifications will not be the only changes if current rumours prove accurate.
Apple is reportedly preparing a new Dark Cherry finish for the iPhone 18 Pro family. It could be offered alongside Light Blue, Dark Gray and Silver.
The existing Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue finishes are expected to leave the lineup.
The change would give Apple another distinctive colour to separate the new Pro generation visually, even if the overall chassis design remains familiar.
9. Camera Control could become simpler
Apple may also revise the Camera Control button.
Rather than adding more interaction methods, the company is expected to simplify it by removing touch sensitivity and haptic feedback. The redesigned control would reportedly operate using pressure sensitivity alone.
It is an unusual change on paper because it focuses on reducing the complexity of an existing feature rather than expanding it.
10. A more seamless Ceramic Shield area on the back
The rear of the iPhone 18 Pro could receive a subtle visual refinement.
The Ceramic Shield section around the MagSafe area is rumoured to adopt a more frosted, seamless appearance. The goal appears to be a cleaner look compared with the existing two-tone treatment.
It may not fundamentally change how the phone works, but it could become one of the easier ways to visually distinguish the new generation.
11. iPhone 18 Pro Max could get a nearly 10% larger battery
One of the most important Pro Max-specific changes concerns battery capacity.
Alleged Chinese regulatory database filings indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could carry a battery nearly 10% larger than the one found in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The report does not provide a confirmed final battery capacity, so the percentage increase remains the more useful figure at this stage.
Combined with the expected LTPO+ display and the efficiency improvements associated with the A20 Pro chip, battery performance could become a major part of the iPhone 18 Pro Max story if all three upgrades materialise.
12. The iPhone 18 Pro Max may also become thicker
A larger battery may come with a physical trade-off.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumoured to be thicker than both the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the standard iPhone 18 Pro.
No confirmed dimensions are included in the current information, meaning it is too early to determine how noticeable that extra thickness would be in everyday use.
Still, the combination of a larger battery and thicker body suggests Apple may be willing to accept a modest increase in size to accommodate changes inside its largest Pro model.
iPhone 18 Pro could bring meaningful upgrades without a complete redesign
Taken together, the leaks point towards an iPhone generation focused less on reinventing the exterior and more on upgrading the technologies underneath it.
The expected A20 Pro chip, C2 modem, N2 wireless chip, LTPO+ display and potential satellite 5G connectivity represent the more technically significant changes. Meanwhile, the variable-aperture camera, smaller Dynamic Island and revised Camera Control could directly affect how owners interact with the phone.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max appears set to go a little further, with reports of both a larger battery and a thicker chassis.
There could also be a substantial price consideration. Estimates cited in the report suggest US starting prices for the iPhone 18 Pro models could be between $200 and $300 higher than those of the iPhone 17 Pro generation. That figure remains an estimate rather than confirmed Apple pricing.
With the expected launch approaching, the larger question is no longer whether the iPhone 18 Pro lineup will change, but which of these rumoured upgrades will survive into the final devices Apple puts on stage.
