Elon Musk’s wealth often makes headlines for its sheer size, but the real story lies in how that fortune is built and how little of it is tied to a flashy lifestyle. As the man behind Tesla and SpaceX, Musk’s net worth is largely a reflection of ownership, long-term bets, and companies that continue to reshape entire industries. While his fortune places him far ahead of most global billionaires, his personal assets paint a picture that is surprisingly restrained and purpose-driven.

Equity, Not Salary, Is the Real Engine

The biggest driver of Musk’s net worth is his ownership in Tesla, where he holds around 12 percent of the company. Unlike many top executives, Musk does not rely on a fixed salary. His wealth rises and falls with Tesla’s valuation, making his financial position directly linked to the company’s performance in the market.

SpaceX, which Musk founded in 2002, is another major pillar of his fortune. The private aerospace company has become a key player in rocket launches, satellite deployment, and space missions. Musk retains a large stake in SpaceX, adding significant private value to his overall wealth.

In 2022, Musk completed the acquisition of Twitter in a deal worth $44 billion. The platform was later rebranded as X. In March 2024, X was merged with Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI. The combined entity was valued at $125 billion, bringing social media and AI development together under a single business structure.

Private Jets Built for Nonstop Workdays

Musk’s schedule leaves little room for commercial travel. With operations spread across the United States and beyond, private jets have become a practical necessity. One of the most advanced aircraft linked to him is the Gulfstream G700, valued at about $78 million. Designed for ultra-long-range travel, the jet includes multiple living areas and advanced onboard systems that allow work and rest during long flights.

He also operates a Gulfstream G650ER, a jet known for its speed and extended range. Powered by Rolls-Royce engines, the aircraft is built for intercontinental travel and features interiors designed for productivity, with seating that can recline and convert into beds. For Musk, these jets function as moving offices rather than symbols of luxury.

Cars Chosen for Curiosity, Not Image

Although Musk leads one of the world’s largest electric car companies, his personal car collection goes far beyond Tesla. One of his most well-known purchases is the McLaren F1, a rare supercar that cost over $1 million when he bought it. The car became widely known after Musk was involved in an accident while driving it, a story he has openly spoken about.

Another standout vehicle is the Lotus Esprit “Wet Nellie,” a submarine-style car used in a James Bond film. Musk bought it with the intention of eventually turning it into a real, working electric submarine car. His collection also includes a mix of classic and performance vehicles such as a 1920 Ford Model T, a 1967 Jaguar E-Type Roadster, a BMW M1, and a 1978 Porsche 935 “King of the Hill.” Together, they reflect a long-standing interest in engineering and automotive history rather than status alone.

A Lifestyle That Rejects Excess

Musk’s real estate choices often surprise people. Between 2020 and 2021, he sold most of his luxury homes, completing deals worth tens of millions of dollars. These included a Hillsborough estate in California purchased for about $40 million, spread across 47 acres and featuring a private ballroom. He also sold several high-value homes in Los Angeles’ Bel Air area, which were collectively estimated to be worth close to $100 million.

Today, Musk lives in a $50,000 prefabricated tiny home near SpaceX facilities in Texas. The compact residence reflects his stated preference for simplicity and owning fewer possessions. He also owns two adjacent homes in Texas valued at around $35 million, primarily intended for family members. There have also been reports of an additional private accommodation near these properties.

Wealth That Stays Invested

Despite his immense fortune, most of Musk’s wealth remains tied up in the companies he runs. His jets support constant travel, his cars reflect personal interests, and his homes are chosen for location and function rather than luxury.

Musk’s lifestyle shows that his focus remains firmly on building and expanding businesses rather than displaying wealth. As Tesla, SpaceX, and his newer ventures continue to grow and evolve, his net worth remains closely linked to the success of ideas that continue to push technological boundaries.
