Apple is reportedly preparing a major refresh for the iPad mini, with the company expected to introduce an OLED display on its smallest tablet later this year. The upcoming model could arrive before the end of October, making it one of Apple’s notable product launches following the expected iPhone 18 Pro announcement in September.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new iPad mini remains on track for a fall launch and is expected to be released by the end of October. The biggest change is expected to be the move from the current LCD panel to an OLED screen, bringing display technology already used on Apple’s higher-end devices to its compact tablet.

OLED could transform the compact iPad experience

The iPad mini currently features an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD display. The screen has remained an important part of the device’s design, but the shift to OLED would represent one of the most significant display upgrades for the tablet in years.

OLED technology differs from LCD because individual pixels can produce their own light instead of relying on a separate backlight. This allows OLED displays to produce deeper blacks, stronger contrast and richer colours. These characteristics can be particularly useful for activities such as watching movies, browsing websites, reading and playing games.

Apple has already brought OLED technology to the iPad Pro, while the iPad mini, iPad Air and entry-level iPad have continued to use LCD panels. Bringing OLED to the iPad mini would therefore narrow the display gap between Apple’s compact tablet and its more premium products.

A launch window set for the weeks after iPhone 18 Pro

Gurman’s latest timeline puts the new iPad mini’s expected release before the end of October. This would place the tablet’s arrival after Apple’s anticipated September 9 event, where the iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to be unveiled.

Apple has not officially announced the new iPad mini or confirmed its launch date. The October timeframe is based on reported information about the company’s upcoming product plans.

The current iPad mini was introduced in October 2024 and brought the A17 Pro chip to the compact tablet. The upcoming model is expected to continue the product’s evolution, although Apple has yet to reveal its specifications or final design.

Apple’s product calendar is getting crowded

The iPad mini is reportedly only one part of a broader product refresh planned by Apple. The company is also expected to introduce new Macs, Apple Watches and AirPods as it prepares for a busy product cycle.

Apple is also working on a new Mac mini, while additional Mac models equipped with newer M6-series chips are expected later. A touchscreen MacBook Pro is also reportedly in development, although it is expected to arrive further down the line.

The company is additionally expected to unveil its iPhone 18 Pro series and its first foldable iPhone as part of its upcoming hardware lineup. These products would make the second half of 2026 particularly significant for Apple’s device portfolio.

OLED could make the iPad mini more competitive

For the iPad mini, however, the OLED upgrade is likely to remain the central attraction. The compact form factor has made the tablet distinct within Apple’s lineup, and a move to OLED could give it a more premium display experience without changing its basic identity.

If Apple follows through with the reported October launch, the new iPad mini could become one of the company’s most closely watched products this fall. For now, the OLED display and late-October timeframe remain based on reported plans, with Apple yet to officially confirm the device.
